In unsurprising news, TV Blackbox can reveal that Channel 7 has moved to address low audiences figures for the new season of Big Brother Australia by bumping the reality show to a later timeslot from next week.
According to advanced schedules available online, the reality series will instead air at 8:30pm from next Monday 13th November on Monday – Wednesday nights, with a double episode in the schedule slated for Wednesday night.
Filling the vacant slot on Monday is triple episodes of Home & Away from 7:00pm, a 7 News Spotlight special episode remembering the life of Johnny Ruffo on Tuesday night, documentary series A Year On Planet Earth on Wednesday evening followed by an ABBA vs Queen repeat on Thursday.
The move comes after the show launched on Monday night this week to just 274,000 5 city capital viewers which was 44% lower than the pervious years launch episode, and then fell to just 213,000 last night which landed it 4th at 7:30pm and sealing the shows fate with being bumped to the later timeslot.
This all comes after a string of failures for Channel 7 this year in the 7:30 timeslot, who earlier this year had to bump underperforming Blow Up Australia after 2 episodes to multichannel 7Flix. It also failed to launch other new formats including Million Dollar Island and We Interrupt this Broadcast, all of which are confirmed to not be returning in 2024.
Channel 7 originally announced the series would be titled Big Brother: House of Love (a blatant attempt to rip-off the Love Island format and success) and would “feature a house full of singles with Big Brother playing cupid”, though the name and theme was reportedly dropped when the cast failed to produce any real romantic matches with promotions for the show now saying this season was “Unmissable”.
The show has also moved to airing later in the year then it’s usual April/May period (bar the VIP season which launched in November 2021), and keen fans of the format and followers of the show noting that it has been almost a year since the filming schedule for the series finished to it being on our screens now.
In recent years there have been calls for the 7 Network to return the show to the live format that viewers knew and loved on the original series when it aired on Channel 10, rather than the pre-recorded version that we’ve been getting for the last few years with only the grand finals live.
In an interview with Rob McKnight last year for the TV Blackbox podcast following the 7 Upfronts for 2023, Director of Network Programming at 7 Angus Ross spoke with Rob about this series of Big Brother:
Rob: I’m a little concerned, I will be honest, when I saw the singles, the application for singles. Look-

… next year. We couldn’t, due to the schedules that we had to produce this next series, consider that. But I’ll be watching with interest because it’s certainly something we would consider going forward.
Rob: Okay, so this is an interesting point and I did want to ask about that and I probably spent too much time asking about Big Brother to be honest. But let’s just say-
I like it. You’re passionate.
Rob: Let’s just say this season doesn’t do great numbers or does on par with what it’s been doing and Big Brother goes off in the UK back to the original format, you would consider going and trying the live 24-hour turnaround?
Yeah, I mean, that would obviously have to be for calendar year ’24, but-
Rob: Of course.
… absolutely we’d do it. I’ll be watching with interest.
With Channel 7 recently renewing Big Brother for 2024 at their annual upfronts event last month, could we see a return to the original format next year? Will the show even return to our screens next year? Time will tell.

Well it wasn’t smart going up against the finale of Masked Singer – people actually watch that show. And when it’s not Big Brother any more, just some random reality show that can’t quite work out what it is, they haven’t held their long-term fan base. I used to watch this show religiously, even after the turkey-slap, even after it cancelled the livestream, even after it moved to Channel 9, but the show that airs on Channel 7 just isn’t Big Brother. I watched last year because it was an all-stars, and that was all it had going for it – the memories of those contestants from back when they were on the real BB. The show itself had no appeal.
Take away the reality shows, enough is enough! Bring back the good drama, police, rescue fictional shows we can relax to!

I only watched enough of the first episode to turn it off. It was Love Island meets F Island. As I had it on Foxtel Series Link I deleted it all. Am old, not a prude, but to put this on at 7.30pm as a family show I was disgusted. Was glad at least they changed the time slot last night to 11pm. I am over this rubbish. Just a sex show. I’d rate it as similar to the old 70s porn of ‘bums and tits’ that boys/men entertained themselves with videos from under the counter at Video Shops. I love Sonia, she’s a wonderful host! Sadly this season is a flop! Nothing like it used to be ☹️ I watched 2 episodes and that was it for me 🙄 In my opinion it’s just a dating show now! I’m a boomer in age but have always loved BB. I loved the diversity and inclusion of different age groups without a lot of sexual attraction involved! And the girls have had so much work done on their faces etc. Bring back real people. I seriously don’t understand why the producers might have thought this would be appealing to all age groups as it has been in the past 🤔

I think that people just unfairly judged it based on the looks and ages of the people on it. I think younger people are more entertaining in my honest opinion. I have a question: In this new season, do these plastic robots ever get into proper clothes or do they spend the entire time half-naked or in bikinis? Reality shows like these have well and truly had their day. And as for Free to Air TV, well, thank goodness for SBS and ABC!
