This April, journey through Chandigarh with The Power of Utopia and experience Daniel Buren’s Observatory of Light on Shelter.

April on Shelter stands as a beacon for those engrossed in the realms of architecture and design, offering a deep dive into two paramount features: The Power of Utopia and Observatory of Light. This month, the platform will transport viewers from the meticulously planned streets of Chandigarh, India, to the reflective glass sails of a Parisian museum, all from the comfort of their living room.

The Power of Utopia: Living with Le Corbusier in Chandigarh delves into the ambitious urban project of Chandigarh, crafted by the visionary Le Corbusier. This 84-minute journey, traversing through Switzerland and India, and set to premiere on April 15, 2023, is not just a chronicle of city planning but an exploration of a dream – a utopia of modernity envisioned in the 1950s. Chandigarh was intended as a human-centric city, diverging from the industrial sprawl that characterized the era. Through the eyes of four cultural workers residing in the city, the film ponders Le Corbusier’s legacy, the amalgamation of utopian urban ideas, and the cultural dialogues between East and West, amidst an atmospherically dense narrative.

Shifting the scene to France, A World Borne by Colours: Observatory of Light unveils the breathtaking Daniel Buren’s artistic intervention on the Louis Vuitton Foundation in Paris. This 25-minute feature, available on April 29, 2016, captures the transformation of the Frank Gehry-designed museum through an ever-evolving play of light and colour. With 3,600 pieces of glass adorned in thirteen different coloured filters, Buren creates a dynamic display that shifts with the daylight and seasons, redefining the museum’s interaction with its environment. Alongside the artist, curator Suzanne Pagé and engineer Nicolas Paschal, among others, provide insights into the challenges and intentions behind this luminous spectacle.
