The Seven Network’s 7NEWS has been recognised with four award nominations in this year’s Melbourne Press Club Quill Awards for Excellence in Victorian Journalism.

7NEWS Chief Reporter Chris Reason is one of four Australian journalists named as a finalist for the prestigious Graham Perkin Australian Journalist of the Year Award for The Devil’s Playground, a relentless four-year investigation and series of reports which culminated in the arrest of former Bishop Christopher Saunders, the highest-ranked Catholic in Australia currently facing child sex offences.

This is Reason’s third nomination for the Graham Perkin award, one of the most coveted prizes in Australian journalism, which he received in 2015 for his live reporting of the Sydney Lindt Café siege.

Sunrise Melbourne correspondents Teegan Dolling and Andrew McCormack, along with their 7NEWS Melbournecolleague Paul Dowsley, earned a nomination in the Best Breaking News or Live Coverage Category for their rolling coverage of the Land Forces protests, all demonstrating incredibly composed and reliable reporting under extreme pressure.

The 7NEWS Melbourneteam also received two nods in the TV/Video News Category:

· Senior reporter Paul Dowsley for Beaufort Rim Driver. Dowsley’s on-the-spot reporting of a dramatic police pursuit of a car being driven on a rim, sparking a trail of dangerous spot fires through the fire zone in Victoria’s West, ended in a heroic citizen’s arrest.

· 7NEWS Melbourne’scrime reporter Cassie Zervos along with managing editor Hope Wilson for Easey Street Extradition, for their coverage of the extradition of one of Australia’s most wanted – Easey Street murder suspect Perry Kouroumblis – from Rome to Australia.

Director 7NEWS Melbourne, Chris Salter, said the nominations reflect the tenacious reporting the 7NEWS team prides itself on.

“Day after day the 7NEWS team is out there covering the stories that matter in our communities – and delivering them across our different programs and platforms.”

“We’re proud of the finalists and all staff whose work was entered, as well as the broader newsroom team who contribute in many ways.”

The Quills are the premier media awards in Victoria. Established by the Melbourne Press Club in 1995 with 10 awards, the Quills now celebrate the best work in over 30 categories across all media.
