Reports today suggested that Big Brother Australia had officially been axed, however TV Blackbox has since learnt that no official decision has been made as yet.

Channel 7 has not made any official announcements about the series, likely because Australian networks are always hesitant to confirm or deny axings, though we can confirm that Big Brother will not return to television screens this year.

The news of the show being reportedly axed came today from journalist Luke Dennehy who was speaking on Perth radio station 6PR about the shows future.

The news follows on from the revamped series recording its worst ever performance last year, with the show being bumped from the 7:30pm timeslot on 7’s main channel after only a week on air to a later timeslot.

While the show did perform well on streaming for the network on catch-up series 7Plus, the series concluded its run in early December with a fairly dismal 152,000 overnight viewers in the 5 capital cities for its 15th season, but still managed to outperform Channel 10’s The Bachelors which languished in it’s 11th and likely last season.

Big Brother Australia attempted to refresh the format again last year with a ‘House of Love’ theme, which was dropped prior to broadcast as the housemates failed to produce any meaningful relationships to support the new tagline for the series.

There however may be plans to return the once popular reality series to its original live format should the network decide to return the show in 2025, though we understand any formal decision on that has yet to be made.

Local viewers have been crying out for the Australian format to return to the live and original format since the show was picked up by Channel 7, recently citing broadcaster ITV in the UK which brought the popular reality series back last year and enjoyed success with returning the original format after a number of years off air.

Channel 7 head programmer Angus Ross previously told the TV Blackbox podcast in late 2022 that he would “be really interested to see how the as live version goes in the UK” when speaking to Rob McKnight about whether they would consider returning to the original format, also saying “it’s certainly something we would consider going forward“.

    • Total flop no diversity among contestants. All wannabe models or TV stars a disaster not meant to be another Love Island or such. Ruined a show I’ve always loved & looked forward to 🤬😢

      • Watching only people that are desperate to put a roof over their heads seems kind of off to me. I just wanted a real mix of people that represents society and sure the homeless are part of society but I think it’d be cruel to watch only homeless people battle for a life changing prize, it’d really be taking advantage of them

  1. That’s probably because it was more like love Island……
We are the ones watching it and how many times do we have to say bring back the old brother where we do the voting, no talking about nominations etc….

  2. You didn’t need to be a genius to know this was gonna happen. Big brother was never a dating show! We already have enough of those.

  3. It will be a hit again if they just follow the original format of the first 3 shows. That’s what everyone loves.

  4. I can’t stand that show, it’s been overdone and it’s boring. My parents are to blame cause they overdid it with watching it every night and took it too serious too. I missed out on my own shows cause of this ridiculous show

  5. Well known that was going too be the case. Format has been played with too much. I think if they had gone back to basics from the first season. It might of made a return

  6. Surprise, Surprise. 🙄
Totally ruined it with a new format, turning into another Love Island with wannabe influencers.
Try again with the original format and viewers may return.

  7. Another example of Seven trying to make a show “on a budget” and failing miserably. We get it Seven, you have no money, but sometimes you need to spend it to keep the viewers

  8. There whole house of love theme was rediculous but it was Graciemae who made the show interesting to watch she was the only housemate was sticking to original format

  9. What made them think it would succeed, when they took away the best part? The audience voting… the interaction… was what made it big.

  10. There are adult internet sites already online with the cheap content bb were trying to create. Morans ruined a good show.

  11. Who cares. Haven’t watched it since about season 2 when it was on Channel 10? Only about 30 years ago.
There’s an idea Channel 10 could run repeats, after all they have nothing that isn’t a repeat or a rehash of another program.

  12. Again, networks play with a format, stuff it up and do not think returning to the original format might increase viewership or then, maybe not but the original Big Brother was interesting more than the Nine and Seven reboots. The majority of comments whilst the show was airing and post show indicate they stuffed it.

  13. Well the last one was just rubbish seriously don’t change what is not broken now you have the consequences before you.

  14. Well they made sure of that with what path they went down in the series, absolute rubbish, only way to have that show succeed now would be go back to the original format ….

  15. Hey let’s get a Winning format that works & change that format completely & make it the complete opposite to what it was ! change it from a social experiment with everyday people to a Love Island with influencers !
    Yes that’ll work 🤔
Said absolutely No one EVER !!!!

  16. Yeah well they shot themselves in the foot by turning the show into another love island trash fest. This show deserved better & that they should’ve listened to the fans when all they wanted was for the show to go back to the old original format instead of going down that route that would eventually yet again destroy the show which it now has sadly

  17. It’s not live, theirs no live @ night, theirs no live subscription to watch it online unedited, they don’t have ordinary people. Really basic stuff to have this popular again Channel 7 missed the mark

  18. Yeah Big Brother this season was dismal…unlikely to consider the prospect of watching too much more reality TV unless Squid Game comes to Australia

  19. What made them think Sonia was the answer ? Why change it ? 😂 don’t mess with something already perfect. Keep Sonia away from the good stuff

  20. Will be great when it goes back to its original format. This find fake love bullshit is done….stop trying to make idiots fall in love with other idiots…..pathetic

  21. Bring back the original format of big brother
All adult age groups all walks of life single married divorced and the ratings will go up again
Not this rubbish love island instagram following $#|T

  22. Good it’s rubbish it comes down to the producers all wierdos in the city that have no idea what people want. Just take it hack to the original big brother people from all different walks of life make for great viewing. 😁😁

  23. the original in 2001 was great but it all slid down the gurgler and at the end it was like love island.just very low class..

  24. They tried the sex sells strategy & it failed dismally. I won’t be crying over it not return as it’s absolutely 💯 pure rubbish with contestants on there with over inflated egos.

  25. Last year I didn’t watch it. Too much like a dating show. And I’m not a huge Sonia fan. Wish channel ten kept it and not with Sonia

  26. It could be a raging success if they would listen to us go back to the original format with real people of all sizes with personalities and some functioning brain matter to entertain us and not following a script or acting up to the cameras finally Let the viewers vote.

  27. I did enjoy last year’s season with Tim and Reggie. That season was generally well received and they ruined it all with the dating season.

  28. It wasn’t even that bad towards the end I don’t think it needs to be cut I just think go back to the orginal point of the show

  29. Don’t axe it, first year I’ve never watched it as it was not BB. Bring it back like it has alway’s been please 🙏

  30. The last season sucked! The idea of pretty people trying to find love, rather than a showmance. It was Love Island set in a creche. I missed the original format, of Big Brother games that messed with people’s insecurities.

  31. Oh well last year’s stuffed them.up big time anyone would’ve thought it was love island Australia
