Netflix has renewed The Diplomat for a fifth season, with the political thriller set to continue following the success of its latest instalment.

The fourth season reached third place on Netflix’s global English-language TV chart with 5.5 million views in its second week, while also ranking second on the Australian Top 10 for the week of October 19–25.

Created by Debora Cahn, the series stars Keri Russell as US ambassador Kate Wyler, whose diplomatic career and complicated marriage to Vice President Hal Wyler (Rufus Sewell) sit at the centre of the drama.

Allison Janney and Bradley Whitford also star as President Grace Penn and her husband Todd, alongside Ato Essandoh, Ali Ahn and Nana Mensah. Cahn serves as executive producer alongside Russell, Janice Williams, Alex Graves, Peter Noah and Eli Attie.

Season 4 sees Kate facing fresh diplomatic challenges as tensions between the US and UK threaten to escalate, while political manoeuvring in the White House adds further complications.

Netflix has yet to reveal where the story will pick up in Season 5.

All four seasons of The Diplomat are available to stream on Netflix now.
