Portrait Artist of the Year has been handed an early third-season renewal by the broadcaster, with casting now open for its 2027 season.
The renewal comes as the second season is currently airing on Sunday nights on the ABC, with all episodes available on iview, and new artists now invited to put their skills to the test.
The series sees amateur and professional artists given four hours to paint a surprise celebrity sitter, with heat winners progressing to the semi-final and final.
The eventual winner will receive a prestigious commission for the National Portrait Gallery’s collection, with a fresh line-up of celebrity subjects planned for the third season.
ABC Head of Arts, Music and Events Kath Earle said the series has continued to put Australian artists in the spotlight.
“Each season, Portrait Artist of the Year puts 54 talented Australian artists in the spotlight, bringing the arts straight into lounge rooms across the country.”
Actor Miranda Tapsell and comedian Luke McGregor will return to host, alongside National Portrait Gallery director Bree Pickering, artist Abdul Abdullah and art historian Robert Wellington as judges.
Applicants will need to submit a self-portrait created within the past five years, another example of their work and a short video explaining what they love about portraiture.
Shortlisted applicants must be available for up to four shoot days between February 22 and March 6, 2027, with travel and accommodation within Australia covered by production.
