THE MAGIC OF MAGDA

There are many reasons we love Magda Szubanski. There’s the comic genius and the cast of outrageous characters she has brought to life over the last 40 years.

Then there’s her endless care and compassion, her razor-sharp wit, and her unfailing ability to laugh at herself. Now you can add courage to the list. She has shown plenty to reach remission in her gruelling 18-month battle with stage-four blood cancer.

Along the way she dug deep, learning much about herself and the experiences that have helped to shape her life. Now, in her first interview since her diagnosis, Magda tells all.

And as Nine’s Tracy Grimshaw discovers, while the Aussie icon has lost none of her humour or zest for life, she is more reflective, raw and unfiltered than ever.

CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD

Time and again Mick Fanning has proven why he’s one of the greatest surfers of all time. He is not only a three-time world champion, he’s also a survivor, the bloke who famously and unforgettably battled a great white shark, live on television, while competing in South Africa.

However, this living legend has also had to endure more than his fair share of hard knocks. The death of one brother at the age of 20 was unthinkable enough, but Mick has lost all three, each much too young.

Then in May this year he had to confront the death of his father John. As Mick reveals to Tara Brown, there have been many difficult days, but in true style he has embraced the hurt to find new strength and gratitude.

Reported by Tara Brown and produced by Lisa Brown.

This episode of 60 Minutes airs tonight, Sunday 20th September, at 8:40pm on Channel 9 and 9Now.
