Four Corners will examine the privacy and national security concerns surrounding Chinese electric vehicles as their popularity grows among Australian consumers.

The rise of Chinese EVs has brought new questions about the technology built into the vehicles, including cameras, microphones and constant internet connectivity.

Those features are now raising concerns about the amount of personal information vehicles can collect, as well as the potential implications for privacy and national security.

The issue extends to government, with some cabinet ministers driving Chinese electric vehicles while experts warn that Australia’s existing privacy and cyber security laws may leave the country exposed.

In Asleep at the Wheel, Four Corners reporter Angus Grigg investigates how much personal information can be accessed through one Chinese EV.

The program also examines concerns about the potential use of connected vehicle technology for surveillance and sabotage.

Four Corners: Asleep at the Wheel airs Monday 21 September at 8.30pm on ABC and iview.
