Tasmanian father-of-three and former Navy chef Trent Fenton has won Alone Australia Season 4, surviving 52 days alone in the Arctic Circle to claim the $250,000 prize.
The 40-year-old outlasted nine other participants after being isolated in the northernmost reaches of Sápmi, Finland, without modern comforts or contact with the outside world.
During his 52 days, Fenton endured subzero temperatures, significant calorie deficits, predators and the psychological demands of prolonged isolation.
For the Tasmanian, spending time in the bush was already closely associated with some of his happiest memories.
“I’m probably wired a bit differently to others.
When I think about being in the bush, I think of adventure, hunting, fishing and some of my happiest memories.
It’s a place where I feel completely comfortable in my own company.
“To have the opportunity to be part of Alone Australia was unbelievable.
I feel incredibly privileged to have spent 52 days in one of the most extreme environments on the planet.
My ultimate goal was to inspire my children and show them that if you really want something, go for it, work hard and don’t quit – your dreams really can become a reality.
The moment my wife tapped me on the shoulder to tell me I’d won is a memory I’ll cherish forever.”
Three participants remained heading into the final episode: 57-year-old farmer Clint from New Zealand, 24-year-oldpermaculture practitioner and educator Jasper from Western Australia, and Fenton.
Clint’s time in Sápmi came to an end after 47 days and almost seven weeks without protein.
After spending the night vomiting, he woke the following morning and decided he had pushed his body as far as it could go.
“It’s a tough environment – the toughest environment I’ve ever been in.
The idea of winning was always in the back of my mind, but the whole objective for me really was to push myself hard, just to see what I could do, and I’ve done that.
“The money would’ve been nice, but there are things in life worth more than money – like health, love, companionship, friends and family.
When you haven’t got them, you realise just how important they are.”
With Clint gone, the contest was down to Jasper and Fenton.
But Jasper’s attempt ended after 48 days when a routine medical check found the infection in his hand had worsened significantly overnight and begun to spread.
The infection posed a serious risk of sepsis if it was left untreated, while the necessary treatment could not be safely administered or monitored on the land.
The doctor told Jasper “you’re no longer medically safe to continue”, resulting in his medical extraction from the competition.
Jasper said he was proud of what he had accomplished during his 48 days in isolation.
“These 48 days have been some of the best of my life.
I’m proud of how far I pushed myself and feel at peace knowing I’ve done the experience justice.
“I got my metamorphic growth here.
For a caterpillar to turn into a butterfly, it first has to turn to mush.
You have to be turned to mush in order to grow.
This place mushed me time and time again.
Every time I hit a hard moment, I got mushed, and when I came out the other side, I’d grown a little bit.
I’m so happy to be leaving here a new person.”
His departure meant Fenton, after 52 days in the Arctic Circle, was the last participant remaining and the winner of Alone Australia Season 4.
According to SBS, Alone Australia remains the most successful original series in the broadcaster’s history.
The fourth season achieved a Total TV Reach of 3.41 million, with 45 per cent of viewers watching through SBS On Demand, according to figures supplied by the network.
Following the season, SBS premiered the one-hour Alone Australia Season 4: The Reunion, hosted by Insight’s Kumi Taguchi.
The special reunited the cast for the first time since they were dropped into the Arctic Circle, with the program featuring their reflections on the experience and previously unseen footage.
SBS Head of Unscripted Joseph Maxwell congratulated Fenton and the wider cast on completing the season.
“Well done to Trent on surviving 52 days alone in the challenging yet beautiful Arctic Circle.
Congratulations also to the entire cast of Season 4 who inspired viewers across the country with their grit, charisma and bravery.
We’re thrilled that this remains the most successful original series in SBS history.”
ITV Studios Australia Chief Content Officer Beth Hart said the company was proud of the cast and production team.

The audience figures supplied with the announcement are sourced from OzTAM VOZ National data, using Consolidated 28 data to 10 August, Consolidated 7 data to 31 August and overnight data for the remainder. Reach is based on one minute for broadcast and 15 seconds for BVOD, with the BVOD contribution based on average audience.
SBS has also confirmed Alone Australia will return to the Arctic Circle for a fifth season, premiering in 2027.
