A mixed night for the two commercial networks locked in a bloody battle for ratings supremacy.

Channel 7

Seven will be over the moon with the results for this season of Dancing With The Stars (582,000) – still unbeaten in the slot however with it slipping on last week and some resurgent competition the series saw its lead shrink a little. 7News Spotlight (280,000) didn’t deliver quite as well as the network would have hoped though it did come through third in the slot, as Born To Kill? (91,000) and Autopsy USA (56,000) fill out an otherwise uneventful night.

Seven first in primary (19.3%) and second in network (25.4%) rankings.

Channel 9

Kicking off the night with 60 Minutes (544,000) helped but didn’t unseat DWTS, though it did run strong and closed the gap AND took a serious lead in to the Sunday night public affairs race. The double ep of The Murder of Lyn Dawson (340,000; 290,000) offered some a deeper dive into some Australian true crime ahead of Wimbledon 2023: Day 7 (106,000) in the late night. The majority of eyeballs were on what became the final day of The Ashes: Third Test Day 4 S1 (722,000 9Gem) which helped Nine to another massive network win.

Nine second in primary (16.8%) and first in network (41.7%) rankings.

Channel 10

10 finding the audience is slipping again for The Sunday Project (169,000 6:30pm; 251,000 7pm) and MasterChef Australia (463,000) as it starts to wane (only a week left of this fifteenth season!). FBI (172,000) and a repeat of NCIS: Hawaii (99,000) keep fans of the US franchises entertained in the late evening.

10 third in both primary (9.9%) and network (14.8%) rankings.

ABC

Grand Designs Revisited (234,000) opened the ABC’s account ahead of the excellent Simon Baker movie-length vehicle Limbo (162,000). Repeats of Why Didn’t They Ask Evans? (36,000) and Small Axe (DNR) fill out what’s left of Sunday.

ABC fourth in both primary (7.2%) and network (10.2%) rankings.

SBS

Bettany Hughes: Treasures Western Turkey (116,000) led SBS’s night, before more history with Dan Snow’s Greatest Discoveries (117,000). This opened the way for the big show of the night in Tour de France: Stage 9 (89,000).

SBS fifth in both primary (4.8%) and network (8%) rankings.

KEY DEMOS

16-39: The Ashes: Third Test Day 4 S1 (183,000) led The Ashes: Third Test Day 4 Lunch/S2, Nine News Sunday, and MasterChef Australia.
