As expected 10 ViacomCBS has hammered out an affiliation deal with regional broadcaster Southern Cross Media Group, but one key detail exposes the future strategy of one partner

On July 1 Network 10 and Southern Cross Media Group (SCA) will officially be partners, allowing the regional broadcaster to retransmit 10’s programming.

As Kevin Perry reported earlier this week on the TV Blackbox website the new affiliate agreement will deliver youth audience focussed multichannel 10 Shake into regional markets for the first time.

The two broadcasters were left with little choice but to reform a partnership after WIN and Nine Entertainment surprised the market when they announced a new affiliation agreement back in March.

Beverley McGarvey, Chief Content Officer and Executive Vice President, ViacomCBS Australia and New Zealand, said:

“We are delighted to announce our new agreement with SCA and that our premium content and live news and sport will reach more Australians through the SCA regional network.”

Grant Blackley, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director, Southern Cross Austereo, said:

“We are thrilled to announce a new affiliation agreement with Network 10 for the next two years and look forward to promoting and monetising 10’s expanding suite of premium content.”

But a key detail in today’s announcement is the duration of the deal. Nine and WIN have entered into a 5-year agreement but this deal between 10 and SCA is only for two years.

Funnily enough, Prime‘s deal with the Seven Network is up in two years.

That would allow SCA to negotiate with the Seven Network as part of a new affiliation agreement in 2023.

But Jarrod Villani, Chief Operating and Commercial Officer and Executive Vice President, ViacomCBS Australia and New Zealand believes the two business will work together for some time yet, saying:

“Ongoing collaboration between us will continue to strengthen our services and we look forward to a strong and successful partnership for years to come.”

The changeover at midnight will cause some disruption for tennis fans as they will have to change channels when Wimbledon moves from SCA to WIN. You can find out more about that HERE
