…and we’re back! The 2021 ratings years has kicked off with a whimper.
A whole new year means a whole new raft of programs vying for our collective attention. Will the big risks pay off? Will the old faithful shows draw us back in and keep us happy? There are lots of questions to be answered, but let’s start with the first night of ratings.
It was a sneaky win for Nine over all, with 60 Minutes (761,000) outdoing all the early evening competition, and the duo of The Trump Show: Downfall (512,000) and Outbreak: The Virus That Shook The World (193,000) lead everything later in the evening. Nine head into the Australian Open in first place with strong primary (21.2%) & network (29.1%) shares.
Honestly, it’s give and take for Seven. Holey Moley (629,000) did tick up and regain some audience, but at $1.5m an episode that’s a pretty horrific result. The repeat of MOVIE: Captain America The Winter Soldier (301,000) managed to capture the total 5CM audience that doesn’t have a Disney+ subscription. Seven second with reasonable primary (20.1%) & network (27.8%) shares.
10 are in all sorts of trouble. The Project (298,000 6:30pm; 403,000 7pm) not competing with anything much, and their big reality offering The Amazing Race Australia (541,000) also saw a small bounce up though it’s way off the pace. A double ep of FBI: Most Wanted (new 214,000; rpt 124,000) finds a small but dedicated audience. 10 third in both primary (12.6%) & network (19.3%) shares.
The ABC delivered a reasonable primetime with Grand Designs House of the Year (506,000) and the season three premiere of Harrow (478,000) competing with and beating some of their commercial rivals. Repeats of Stateless (79,000) and Killing Eve (32,000) round out the night. ABC in fourth for both primary (11.6%) & network (16.5%) shares.
Breakfast
Weekend Sunrise (240,000) starts the year in front, followed reasonably closely by Weekend Breakfast (201,000 [103,000 ABC; 98,000 ABC News]). Weekend Today (174,000) a full step back in third.
Insiders (385,000 [255,000 ABC; 130,000 ABC News]) and Offsiders (222,000 [148,000 ABC; 74,000 ABC News]) own Sunday morning for the ABC.
