Seven will tonight premiere Centimetre Perfect, a feature-length documentary celebrating the life and career of late sports broadcaster Dennis Cometti.
Cometti died aged 76 in March this year, bringing to an end a broadcasting career that spanned more than five decades and took in AFL, cricket and the Olympic Games.
He became particularly synonymous with AFL commentary, with his distinctive voice and trademark one-liners making him one of the most recognisable voices in Australian sport.
The documentary brings together those who worked alongside Cometti and those who knew him away from the commentary box, including his son Mark Cometti, Bruce McAvaney, Eddie McGuire, Sandy Roberts and Basil Zempilas.
Olympic champions Kieren Perkins and Susie O’Neill also feature, alongside AFL identities including Nick Riewoldt, Chris Judd and Bob Murphy, reflecting on Cometti’s ability to capture the emotion of some of sport’s biggest moments.
Cometti began his broadcasting career in Perth radio before joining the ABC, where he called Test cricket, before moving to Seven and becoming a fixture of its AFL coverage.
He also called three Olympic Games and was inducted into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame in 2019 and the Australian Football Hall of Fame in 2020.
His final AFL television commentary came with the Western Bulldogs’ drought-breaking premiership in 2016, although he continued calling sport on radio until the 2021 AFL Grand Final.
