Q+A’s upcoming episode tackles a trio of pivotal subjects: healthcare services, social equity, and the deepening humanitarian plight in the Middle East.

As violence escalates in Gaza with intensified Israeli operations against Hamas, which is designated as a terrorist organization by several countries, international bodies are intensifying their call for temporary cessations of hostilities to address the critical needs of civilians.

With the medical infrastructure in Gaza under severe strain, Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is pushing for a halt in the fighting. The health group is facing dire shortages of medical supplies and anaesthetics, trying to provide care in extreme conditions.

The deficiency of supplies, despite continuous efforts to dispatch aid, remains stark, signalling a distressing shortfall amidst an escalating humanitarian demand. This deficit leaves the Gazan population, already perched on the verge of a crisis, in an increasingly precarious situation.

Domestically, Australia confronts its own health challenges as vaping gains alarming traction among youth. Despite potential new regulations, concerns persist over the efficiency of such measures when a robust black market thrives. This raises the question of whether regulatory efforts can stem what is feared to become a major public health disaster.

Simultaneously, the government initiates a boost to the bulk-billing incentive. This strategy is set to improve, but skepticism remains whether it will substantially increase the availability of fee-free GP services for disadvantaged Australians.

On the panel this week, Mark Butler, the Minister for Health & Aged Care, will bring his expertise to the fore. Having served as the Labor Member for both Port Adelaide and Hindmarsh since 2007, Butler is well-versed in national health policy nuances.

Joining the discussion is Dai Le, an Independent MP for Fowler. Elected in 2022, Le made history as the first Vietnamese-Australian in federal parliament, bringing a fresh and diverse voice to Australian politics.

Keith Wolahan, the Liberal Member for Menzies, will contribute insights from his experience as a former barrister and Army officer. Since his election in 2022, Wolahan has been active in legislative matters, including defence and national security.

Jennifer Tierney, as MSF Australia’s Executive Director, offers a global perspective derived from frontline medical humanitarian work. Her commitment to medical accessibility for all, particularly in conflict zones, underscores her advocacy and operational work.

Lastly, Matilda Boseley will add context from her role as a journalist with Guardian Australia. Known for her pioneering work on the outlet’s TikTok presence, Boseley has become a prominent voice in digital journalism, engaging with audiences on complex news topics through innovative formats.

Q+A is live from Sydney on Monday, 6 November at 9.35pm AEDT on ABC and iview
