Tracey Holmes, renowned sports journalist and broadcaster, has made public her decision to leave the ABC.

The announcement came through the social media platform, X, previously known as Twitter. Holmes stated,

Paris 2024 beckons. It will be my 14th Olympic Games as a journalist/reporter/broadcaster. This coming Olympics, however, will not be with the ABC as I have resigned and my tenure concludes on November 30.

Holmes began her association with the ABC as a broadcast trainee in 1989. She later made headlines by becoming the country’s first female host of a national sports program, Grandstand.

Her most recent role was presenting the sports and politics podcast, The Ticket.

Her contributions to the field of sports journalism have been recognised on various occasions. In March, the Australian Sports Commission awarded Holmes a lifetime achievement media award. Additionally, the International Olympic Committee honoured her with the Women and Sports Awards for Oceania for her efforts in mentoring female sports journalists.

Her departure follows closely on the heels of her husband, Stan Grant‘s exit from the ABC. Grant recently assumed the position of Asia Pacific director at the Constructive Institute at the University of Melbourne. Prior to that, he had resigned from the role of host of Q+A.

Grant cited challenges faced due to racially-motivated feedback he received on social media platforms, particularly following his commentary during the ABC’s coverage of the coronation of King Charles III.

Although Holmes’ more recent stint with the ABC started in 2014, focusing on sport across ABC Radio and Television, her history with the broadcaster goes back to her initial entry in 1989.

Additionally, her career features roles at other networks such as SBS, Seven, and CNN. She also worked as a media spokesperson for the Sydney Organising Committee for the Olympic Games.
