As part of his ongoing crusade in War on Waste, Craig Reucassel confronts the issue of food wastage amongst everyday Australians in the next episode, airing Tuesday 1 August at 8.30pm on ABC and view.
To spotlight the severity of the problem, Reucassel sets a striking visualisation: a fifty-metre table laden with 500 kilograms of food, equivalent to the waste generated by how many families?
Design students from the University of NSW join the battle, tasked with reimagining commonly used products, such as the ubiquitous soy sauce plastic fish, bread bags, and fruit stickers, to enhance their recyclability. The episode teases the viewers with the prospect of seeing these ingenious new designs on supermarket shelves in the future.
Reucassel also seeks the expertise of science communicator Lee Constable to delineate the environmental impacts of food waste. Viewers will be treated to expert tips on how to limit food wastage at home.
The episode continues by revisiting our farmers to investigate if supermarket aesthetic standards are still a key driver in fruit and vegetable wastage.
