The spotlight will shine brightly on the Australian national team, the Matildas, as they vie for their first-ever Cup title. Channel 7 and 7plus will deliver 15 live, HD broadcasts of key matches from July 20 to August 20, with Mel McLaughlin and Bruce McAvaney at the helm of the elite commentary team.

A high-stakes match between Australia and the tournament’s first-timers, Republic of Ireland, is scheduled for Thursday evening at Stadium Australia, Sydney, where a crowd of about 75,000 supporters is predicted to gather.

The Matildas, recently victorious over fifth-ranked France, enter this clash buoyed by a winning streak of nine out of their last 10 international games. Nevertheless, the pressure is mounting as Australia seeks to advance past the quarter-finals of a World Cup for the first time in their history.

A glance at the past reveals that the Matildas have had a rocky start to their World Cup journey. Their only victorious inaugural match was a 4-1 triumph over Ghana at the 2007 event. Following that, they suffered losses in their opening games to Brazil in 2011, the USA in 2015, and Italy in 2019.

But with a sea of fans set to cheer them on this year, the Matildas are presented with a golden opportunity to break this cycle and set themselves on a path to making deep inroads at the World Cup.

Fans will be able to relive all the action, as 7plus provides on-demand streaming of replays for all Matilda matches. Additionally, bonus content like athlete interviews and feature stories will also be available.
