Shane Van Gisbergen, Supercars Champion and recent victor in the NASCAR Cup Series race in Chicago, will be aiming for another win at the Townsville 500 this weekend.
Shane Van Gisbergen made history as the first driver in six decades to secure a NASCAR win on debut, intensifying the anticipation for his performance on home turf.
The race, which is part of the Supercars Championship, will take place at the Reid Park street circuit and broadcast from 12.00pm this Saturday on Seven, 7mate and 7plus. The round six battle will see the Chevrolet Racing Camaro and the Ford Performance Mustang going head-to-head, adding more excitement to the thrilling event.
Notably, Van Gisbergen will face stiff competition from rising stars such as Brodie Kostecki and Will Brown, who have been making impressive strides in this year’s leaderboard. Meanwhile, Coca-Cola Racing by Erebus will be keen to maintain their 142-point teams’ championship lead, with Red Bull Ampol Racing closely trailing them.
Mark Beretta, a favourite from Sunrise and Seven’s resident motorsport expert, commented,
“This is fast shaping up as the round of the year in the glorious Townsville sunshine!”. Beretta also highlighted the return of Van Gisbergen from his successful NASCAR debut and the evolving dynamics of the competition, “Brodie Kostecki is going to have to fight like a Spartan to hold onto his championship lead.”
