The family of Shane Warne are reportedly now offering their full support for a two-part Channel 9 drama production focused on the life and drama of the spin king.
Channel 9 has issued a media statement indicating representatives from the network and producers Screentime have recently met with the Warne family who have now offered their support for the controversial series.
The change of heart comes after Warne’s eldest daughter Brooke, initially posted on social media her disgust at the project;
“Do any of you have any respect for Dad? Or his family? Who did so much for Channel 9 and now you want to dramatise his life and our families life 6 months after he passed away?”
“You are beyond disrespectful.”
Warne’s other daughter Summer, 20, added;
“I would really like to know what goes through people’s heads to think this is okay?”
The network has indicated it “looks forward to collaborating with the family” as filming of the min-series continues. Its currently unclear if Warne’s family will benefit financially from the production.
Production commenced this week on Warnie, with the drama event set to premiere on Channel 9 later in 2023.
Airing over two nights, Warnie will pay tribute to one of the greatest Australians of all time, the Aussie larrikin who lived life to the full. There has never been and never will be another like him.
Shane Warne was an Aussie legend, a cultural icon, a cricketing genius, a charmer and a loveable rogue.
Warnie, as he was affectionately known to all, transcended cricket.
Like all great characters, he inspired extreme reactions from people from all walks of life, in Australia and around the world.
Warnie stars Alex Williams (Underground: The Julian Assange Story, The Heights) as Shane Warne, Anthony Hayes (Gold, Light Between Oceans) and Marny Kennedy (Between Two Worlds, Janet King), supported by a stellar cast including Jacquie Brennan (Wentworth, Informer 3838), Jeremy Stanford (Winners & Losers, Wentworth), Ben Hall (Neighbours, Devil’s Playground), Tom Stokes (The Railway Man, Equals), Darcy Kent (New Gold Mountain, Spreadsheet), and newcomer Shanti Kali.
Warnie is produced for the 9Network by Screentime, a Banijay company.
