In a move that’s likely to further frustrate Australian Football fans, Optus has confirmed significant price increases for its sports streaming service.

From 1 August 2022, the cost of an Optus Sport subscription will be increasing to a Recommended Retail Price (RRP) of $24.99. Currently, eligible Optus customers have been able to access the Optus Sport service for $14.99 per month

Additionally, Optus advises customers who are currently receiving the sports package for free with an eligible mobile or broadband package will now be faced with a monthly fee of $6.99 per month should they wish to continue viewing sports content.

Optus advises that annual passes will remain available as an option for subscribers. Previously available for $99, the fee for the annual plan will rise to $199 from August.

The pricing changes come after the Foxtel owned streaming platform Kayo recently increased its basic plan pricing from $25 to $27.50 per month. Australian football fans have become increasingly frustrated at the need to subscribe to multiple services including Paramount+ and Stan Sport in order to follow their favourite competitions.

Optus has blamed significant increases in broadcast rights fees for the price increase. The sports streaming service has recently secured a new 6-year deal for the Premier League and the Women’s Super League for a further two years.

To coincide with the price increase, Optus has confirmed it will be upgrading its sports streaming service to 1080p HD video from this August. Additionally, from August Optus customers will need to manage their Optus Sport subscription via the company’s recently launched subscription management platform, Optus SubHub.
