MOST POPULAR ACTOR FINALISTS

ANNA TORV (The Newsreader, Fires – ABC)

Known for her role as Olivia Dunham on American sci-fi series Fringe, Anna Torv appeared in one episode of the ABC drama Fires, and in the lead role of Helen Norville in The Newsreader.

Torv won multiple awards for her work in Fringe, which lasted for five seasons. She also won a Logie award for Most Outstanding Actress in 2017 for her role in Australian political thriller, Secret City.

About her character in The Newsreader, Torv said, “I wanted to make [Helen] just not still … I just needed her to be just volatile and outwardly so, in every area”.

Torv is currently filming in a recurring role for HBO’s The Last of Us series, with the first season expected to debut next year.

RAY MEAGHER (Home and Away – Seven)

Ray Meagher has become a household name ever since he secured the role of Alf Stewart in Home and Away back in 1988.

As the only cast member who’s remained with the program since it began, Meagher hold a Guinness World Record for longest-serving actor in an Australian serial.

He won the coveted Gold Logie in 2010, and also picked up the Most Popular Actor Logie in 2018, with nominations in 2010, 2012 and 2019.

With a role so beloved in Australian television, Meagher has always been one of the favourites in Summer Bay, somehow surviving all of the turmoil the soap encounters. He will equally be a favourite at the TV Boxies.

CELIA PACQUOLA (Rosehaven – ABC)

Starring and writing in the comedy series Rosehaven opposite Luke McGregor, Celia Pacquola has proven she’s far more capable of taking on roles in the entertainment industry than just being a comedienne.

Pacquola co-wrote every single episode of the five seasons of Rosehaven with McGregor, with the pair strictly keeping their characters platonic for the show. About this, Pacquola said, “Particularly in our age bracket, in your 30s, people often don’t think it’s possible to have a platonic male-female relationship, but that is our actual experience”.

Despite concluding the series earlier this year, Pacquola frequents various other programs all-year round, such as Have You Been Paying Attention?, The Project and Hughesy, We Have A Problem.

With a breakout acting role under her belt, Pacquola’s acting career is just the beginning, and could be marked with a TV Boxie if successful in the Most Popular Actor category.

STEPHEN PEACOCKE (The Newsreader – ABC, RFDS – Seven, Five Bedrooms – Paramount+)

With three shows clocked up for this nomination for Stephen Peacocke, the popular actor continues to exhibit success on Australian television.

Landing his breakout role of Darryl Braxton in Home and Away, Peacocke won four awards for his role in the soap opera, including three Logie awards.

About the cast and success of Five Bedrooms, Peacocke said, “The cast is incredible, they’re just a top bunch of people… The scripts are clever, witty and natural and if you start with a good script, then you’re onto a winner”.

As one of the most seen actors nominated in this category, Peacocke will be a tough competitor in the Most Popular Actor category at the TV Boxies.

NICOLE KIDMAN (Nine Perfect Strangers – Amazon Prime Video)

Without a doubt the biggest name in this category, Nicole Kidman is an international sensation and in high-demand for several film and television roles.

This year Kidman starred in the Hulu (Amazon Prime Video in Australia) miniseries Nine Perfect Strangers, playing the role of Masha Dmitrichenko, the founder of a wellness resort called Tranquillum House.

The former Oscar and Emmy winner had elected to stay in character throughout the entire production of the series, which took place in Byron Bay, as a form of method acting.

In an interview earlier this year, Kidman said, “I still approach acting with such vigor after so many years because I expand… I literally can change because of a role”.
