After an incredible run on hit reality show SAS Australia that saw Dan Ewing make it all the way to the top five, he tells Afternoons with 4BC host Sofie Formica just how disappointing the portrayal of his explosive exit was.

During the final episode of this year’s season of SAS Australia, actor Dan Ewing was sensationally cut from the course at the final five after appearing to fabricate a cover story for the DS captors.

However, in an interview with Sofie Formica for the Afternoons with 4BC show, Dan reveals the cover story was given to him and the other four contestants by producers, and they were instructed to read and rehearse the story for questioning with the DS.

The scene features a voice-over that says Dan was “misunderstanding the purpose of being questioned”, and “draws upon his acting background by inventing a cover story”.

When asked what really happened by Sofie, Dan said:

“As with every single season of SAS Australia, there’s an escape and evasion drill right, and we are given a cover story to study for 36 hours. We’re given it by the DS, obviously it’s written by producers. And what you’re hearing, that detail, is a part of the cover story.

“For them to then say on the voice-over that ‘actor Dan Ewing fabricates a cover story’, that was extremely, extremely disappointing to be portrayed that way.

“To again paint me with this brush of the actor makes up… invents, to use the word of the V-O, a cover story. That is a complete lie. And obviously there is TV editing, we all understand that, that is a complete fabrication. And it’s very disappointing that the editors, the production company, and the network chose to go down that path.”

Sofie then asked Dan about his portrayal throughout the season, and the editing of his spirituality.

Dan said:

“Let’s demystify, meditation is just changing your state, some people drink, some people smoke, whatever, that’s all that is. But that was about 10% of my answer. The real answer I gave was ‘I was struggling with some things in my life, and I walked into a GP’s office,’ which everybody’s done, ‘I spoke to a psychologist, and I was given strategies’.

“And I just think it’s such a missed opportunity, guys. If you had played that, that’s relatable to Macca and Darren down at the pub, just playing the meditation stuff. I know what I would have thought a few years ago before I started doing this stuff. You know, a lot of guys understand that half the Rugby players in Queensland meditate now, or visualise before games. But by not giving it that context we’ve missed a real opportunity here, and that’s the disappointing part.”

Sofie and Dan also discussed Occupation: Rainfall, the Aussie film starring Dan, Temuera Morrison, Daniel Gillies, and Ken Jeong, going global on Netflix.

“For it to launch on Netflix in the US, it had already shot to the tops of the charts over there. But to go on the biggest platform in the world and to be number one on that platform on it’s opening day, it’s absolutely huge. So, I can’t wait for Aussie audiences and UK audiences to see it, but the Americans are loving it.”
