After reports emerged that Daryl Somers was canvassing fans for segment ideas for the 50th anniversary of Hey Hey It’s Saturday, speculation has been mounting on whether the show would be changing networks.

The Herald Sun reported Nine would not be airing the special, saying:

Nine says it’s not airing Hey Hey’s 50th celebration show, with TV sources saying it may find a home at Seven, where Somers hosts Dancing With The Stars.

Now TV Blackbox can confirm the special will run on Channel 7. Contributor Aaron Ryan broke the news while recording the latest edition of the TV Blackbox Podcast, which will be released this afternoon.

According to Ryan:

“I can confirm the special will indeed air on Channel 7”

What’s not clear is whether the special will be live or pre-recorded, although due to the blackface controversy of the rebooted series in 2009 it’s most likely to be a pre-record.

Sources say Nine rejected the pitch for the 50th anniversary and Somers then took the idea to Channel 7.

The Seven Network recently had to cancel the planned revival of Australia’s Got Talent and will air Australian Gangster, the Hey Hey special and some 7 News Spotlight specials in its place.

  1. Such great news .. what a shame you’ve tried to politicise and race bait your readers by highlighting the blackface incident. Poor !

  2. Bring back “Hey Hey it’s Saturday” every Saturday night – forget the woke – let’s be us again

  3. We need some comedy and some laughter. So why not bring back hey hey it’s Saturday. Every Saturday night.

  4. When will people realise the past should stay there. If I want Red Faces, I have YouTube.
Darryl isn’t even a comedian or remotely funny, instead struggles & fluffs about linking segments (badly).

Even in its hey day, it was “dad humour” at best. Doesn’t belong on 2021 TV……let’s bring back Fast Forward with the gay airline hosts, the Indian carpet sales commercials & all the other out of date stereotypes.

Like last time, Hey Hey’s, irrelevance with be backed up by mediocre ratings

  5. Thank you so much l’m over the moon so happy.
There will be so many others feeling the same way.
    What a blast

  6. Without a doubt it was a great 50years[ I’m old enough to have watched from the beginning], however those were the days when nearly, everything/anything was acceptable. Unfortunately, the times we now live in, PC has gone mad so the 2021 restrictions will cruel the outcome of an anniversary show. [ I’m not saying the changes being made aren’t warranted, they are of course, it’s just impossible to replicate those early shows.] … Hopefully, most of the original cast will be healthy and available, especially Dickie Knee. Warm wishes, good luck guys, all the best.
