Thursday night is a mess. NRL, sometimes AFL, different programming based on the footy around the country, Q+A getting blasted. No wonder the consistency of just being present by 10’s cooking show stands out.

A Current Affair (642,000) is the only consistent thing in Nine’s schedule across the country on Thursdays…then the NRL steps in.
[BNE/SYD primary; MEL/ADL/PER multi-channel]
The start of the Indigenous round with NRL Thursday Night Footy: Brisbane Broncos vs Melbourne Storm (387,000) draws a reasonable FTA audience – up slightly compared to last week’s game. Thursday Night Knock-Off (98,000) is purely fan service.
[MEL/ADL/PER primary]
RBT (206,000), a repeat of Paramedics (148,000), and Kings Cross ER (104,000) round out the rest of the country’s ob-doc evening.
Nine first in both primary (18.9%) and network (27.3%) rankings.

As usual, the triple ep of Home & Away (533,000; 478,000 late) – now split-coded, but not into three *sigh* – is a case of diminishing returns for Seven. THEN, for all the rest of the shows for the evening, they are seen across the nation however land in different timeslots based on the capital city market: 10 Years Younger in 10 Days (153,000), How To Look Good Naked (93,000), and The Front Bar (350,000).
Seven second in both primary (18.4%) and network (27.2%) rankings.

The Project (278,000 6:30pm; 465,000 7pm) is up slightly on Wednesday for 10, likely due to Melbourne lockdown coverage. MasterChef Australia (557,000) absolutely delivers the night’s high point, winning the timeslot and boosting the networks flagging weekly share (though still down marginally on last night but not the lowest ep of the week). Some people watched the new and repeat episodes of Law & Order: SVU (258,000; 203,000) and fewer still the season finale of US drama This Is Us (77,000) before the audience called it quits.
10 third in both primary (12.4%) and network (19.6%) rankings.

7:30 (579,000) and the season finale of Back Roads (482,000)
usually make for a compelling double. This week it was good enough to come second in the slot (530,000 average). Everyone knows Q+A (276,000) is failing on Thursday nights, and everyone has written about it. What is with this self-destructive programming move to maintain a losing formula? A Life in Ten Pictures (179,000) is about how many people watched it.
ABC fourth in both primary (12%) and network (18%) rankings.

SBS offer up repeats of Secrets of the Tower of London (111,000)
and Michael Mosley: Trust Me, I’m A Doctor (106,000) early in the night, and phenomenal US drama The Handmaid’s Tale (127,000) doesn’t get much in the linear broadcast, though catch-up will play a big part in its success.
SBS fifth in both primary (4.2%) and network (7.9%) rankings.

KEY DEMOS
16-39: The Project 7pm wins this one, very closely followed by MasterChef Australia, Seven News 6:30pm, and Nine News 6pm/6:30pm.

18-49: Nine News 6pm takes the win barely ahead of MasterChef Australia, followed by Nine News 6:30pm, The Project 7pm and Seven News 6:30pm.

25-54: It’s all Nine News 6pm/6:30pm at the top, chased by MasterChef Australia, then Seven News 6pm/6:30pm.

MULTI-CHANNELS
ABC News Mornings-AM (178,000) nabbed the win for ABC News largely due to the Melbourne lockdown/Coronavirus coverage. The afternoon repeat of Bluey (165,000) has to settle for second place.

BREKKY BATTLE
Sunrise (257,000)
The Today Show (216,000)
ABC Breakfast (202,000 (130,000 ABC; 72,000 ABC News))

  1. Was watching Q & A last night. Now call me old and NOT-woke but I have difficulty in taking serious the words coming from a bloke in a shiny, multi-coloured jacket with a large feather sprouting from his head.
If I was to utter this statement on social media I would probably be burned at the (virtual) stake.
