Queensland’s premier weight-for-age staying contest, the Group 1 Doomben Cup, highlights an action-packed day of thoroughbred racing on the Seven Network this Saturday, which will also feature all the big moments from Rosehill Gardens and Flemington.
The Doomben Cup (2000m) is one of the most prestigious races of the Brisbane Winter Carnival and this year’s edition shapes as a wide-open affair after attracting an outstanding field that includes seven Group 1 winners.
Seven’s live and free coverage begins at 12.00pm AEST Saturday on Channel 7, 7two and 7plus. It will be led by racing’s #1 commentary team, which this week features Jason Richardson, Katelyn Mallyon, Emily Bosson, who will be trackside at Doomben, and Sky Racing’s Lizzie Jelfs.
In the Doomben Cup, Zaaki is expected to start favourite after his impressive last-start win in the A.D. Hollindale Stakes. However, the Annabel Neasham-trained gelding will have to overcome a star-studded field headlined by Cox Plate winner Sir Dragonet and All Star Mile victor Mugatoo, while champion New Zealand mare Melody Belle can’t be discounted in her final race as she strives to add to her remarkable tally of 14 Group 1 wins.
On the Brisbane Winter Carnival’s final day at Doomben before heading to Eagle Farm, the other must-see races include The Roses (Group 2, 2000m) for three-year-old fillies, and the Group 3 BRC Sprint (1350m).
Rosehill Gardens hosts Lord Mayors Cup Day on Saturday, when Chris Waller-trained gelding Wu Gok will be bidding for back-to-back victories in the Listed Lord Mayors Cup (2000m).
At Flemington, National Jockeys Trust Race Day will be headlined by The Straight Six (Listed, 1200m), where Warrnambool trainer Lindsey Smith and his gelding Great Again are also aiming to repeat their 2020 triumph.
