Sunday Ratings | Audiences abandon Free To Air TV

It’s ratings week 2 in the new year, and the new normal is desperately disappointing.

Mid-500’s a diabolical number for anything in primetime and a clear indication that audiences were anywhere but FTA last night. Sure, there’s the consolidated numbers to add in and those using BVOD, however these overnight numbers are a clear indication that clinging to a linear broadcast model is a bad idea.

While Nine had a reasonable night with the Australian Open 2021 Night 7 (466,000) the limited number of Aussies moving into the second week are realised in the match ratings. The Halep/Swiatek (468,000) and Djokovic/Raoni (319,000) matches didn’t exactly set the world on fire. Still, with their News product winning in SYD and MEL it was enough to take the night. Nine first in both primary (21%) & network (28.9%) shares.

Seven’s ever-diminishing Holey Moley Australia (510,000) ticked up a little though no enough to win the timeslot (third!). Scheduling MOVIE: Shooter (310,000) is a clear sign they’re not trying to compete with the tennis. Sevens second in both primary (18.3%) & network (26.7%) shares.

The ABC’s Sunday night continues to offer the most diversity and interest. Australian doco Quoll Farm (530,000) and Australian drama Harrow (490,000) competed admirably, and then new Silent Witness (291,000) and a repeat of Killing Eve (50,000) delivered fan-service only. ABC third in primary (13.3%) & fourth in network (17.5%) shares.

A slow start to the night – again – for 10 saw The Project (272,000 6:30pm; 475,000 7pm) struggle to compete initially and then set a solid bed for The Amazing Race Australia (564,000) to win the timeslot. New then repeat eps of FBI: Most Wanted (245,000; 137,000) kept only the most dedicated fans interested. 10 fourth again in primary (12.8%) & though third in network (19.6%) shares.
