One of the biggest names in UFC, Conor McGregor, will return to the cage for the first time in more than a year when he takes on Dustin Poirier in UFC 25.
The first UFC event of 2021 is set to be explosive returning to ‘Fight Island’ in Abu Dhabi for UFC 257 headlined by Conor ‘The Notorious’ McGregor returning to the Octagon after announcing his retirement for a rematch against Dustin Poirier in the UFC lightweight division.
McGregor and Poirier first fought at UFC 178 in September 2014, and although it was early days in McGregor’s career, his first round TKO win of Poirier catapulted him into the UFC going on to become the first UFC fighter ever to hold two belts simultaneously.
Former UFC featherweight and lightweight champion McGregor’s last trip to the Octagon was this time last year at UFC 246 in January 2020 with a first round win over Donald ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone. Following this, he announced his retirement for the second time.
Poirier has won 10 fights since his last meeting with McGregor, facing and beating some of the best in the UFC including Justin Gaethje, Max Holloway and his most recent bout against Dan Hooker which was named one of the top five fights of the year in 2020.
In the co-main event, Poirier’s last opponent, New Zealand lightweight contender Dan Hooker will fight former Bellator champion Michael Chandler.
Also on the card in the women’s division, Jessica Eye and Joanne Calderwood will go head-to-head in a women’s flyweight bout, with Marina Rodriguez facing Amanda Ribas in the women’s strawweight bout.
