In 1930, Germany was a liberal democracy.

Just four years later, democracy was dead, Germany’s leader is a dictator and its government is in the hands of murderers.

This series from award winning producers 72 Films tells the story of how this happened. Leading historians and experts get inside the heads of some of the key players, whose political plotting, miscalculations and personal ambitions helped to destroy democracy and deliver control to Hitler.

Episode One takes us into the corridors of power where Germany’s top political mastermind sees an opportunity to use the sudden popularity of the Nazis for his own ends.

This sets off a chain of miscalculations, backroom deals and power grabs that will propel Hitler from the fringes of political activism into the heart of government.

The Rise Of The Nazis premieres Thursday, 14 January at 8.30pm on SBS and On Demand (3 Parts)
