The role of overseas reporter for any network is a coveted role for anyone hoping to advance their career. Foreign postings can lead to big roles within the company upon return but also exposes that reporter to a national audience as they file stories for all news programs, including the TODAY show.

As Tim Arvier prepares to pack his bags and return home to Australia, it can now be revealed Perth reporter Michael Genovese will be replacing him as the US Correspondent for Nine News.

Ariver has proven himself a fearless reporter in the US, most recently while he was covering the Portland riots live.

Excited about the appointment, Perth news director Michael Best sent this e-mail out to staff:

I have some amazing news to share this morning.

Michael Genovese has been appointed US Correspondent for Nine News.

Gena has spent this year waking up early … very early.

His drive and dedication to cover breaking news every day from 2 am Perth time has been extraordinary.  He’s even learnt how to wander aimlessly around empty airport terminals before dawn at the direction of Karl!

Michael started his journalism career in sport as a boundary rider for radio AFL coverage, and since then has moved through numerous roles for Nine News Perth – covering everything from State Politics, to reading the 6 pm and local Today Show news.. and even hosting a radio show on 6PR. His passion for news is boundless.

Gena’s appointment is recognition of his skill and work ethic.

It’s also recognition for Nine News Perth, and the news service you all work tirelessly to create every single day of the year.

This is the first Foreign posting from Perth and demonstrates our commitment to career development right across the Network.

Michael will replace Tim Arvier in our LA bureau early next year.

Now of course Gena is just one half of the newsroom’s favourite power couple.

Jerrie Demasi is also taking on a new expanded role – of Crime Editor.

There is no greater story breaker on the crime round in WA, and now that she’ll be leading an expanded crime team, our coverage will only get better.

Jerrie will take extended leave mid next year, and head over to join Gena in LA … where she’ll work for Nine in a freelance capacity and also explore opportunities at American TV networks.

Michael’s role as Perth Correspondent for the Today Show will now be rotated between reporters in the newsroom.  It’ll be great opportunity for more exposure to the network, and experience reporting in a fluid extended show.

Please congratulate Gena and Jerrie – and wish them all the best on their exciting new adventure!

Network news director Darren Wick is known for casting the net wider than Sydney in previous appointments – a change from tradition.
