The critically acclaimed fourth season leads a highly anticipated month of drama programming this October

From sensual thrillers and medical sagas to glitzy science-fiction, SBS is bringing an array of drama series to Australian audiences this October.

From acclaimed creator and executive producer Noah Hawley and starring Chris Rock, the eleven-episode fourth instalment of the Emmy® and Golden Globe® award-winning series Fargo will premiere with a double episode at 8:30pm, Thursday 8 October on SBS and SBS On Demand.

Boasting a stellar ensemble cast, Chris Rock is joined by Jason Schwartzman, Salvatore Esposito, Ben Whishaw, Jessie Buckley, Jack Huston, E’myri Crutchfield, Andrew Bird, Anji White, Gaetano Bruno, Sean Fortunato, Jeremie Harris, Corey Hendrix, Matthew Elam, James Vincent Meredith, Francesco Acquaroli, Karen Aldridge, Kelsey Asbille, Rodney Jones, Jameson Braccioforte, Tommaso Ragno, Glynn Turman and Timothy Olyphant.

Fargo

In 1950 Kansas City, two criminal syndicates fighting for a piece of the American dream have struck an uneasy peace. Together, they control an alternate economy of exploitation and drugs. To cement their truce, Loy Cannon (Chris Rock), the head of the African American crime family, trades his youngest son Satchel (Rodney Jones), to his enemy Donatello Fadda (Tommaso Ragno), the head of the Italian mafia. In return, Donatello surrenders his youngest son Zero (Jameson Braccioforte) to Loy.

When Donatello dies in the hospital following a routine surgery, the tenuous truce is threatened. Josto Fadda (Jason Schwartzman) takes up his father’s mantle, but his efforts to stabilise the organisation are undermined by his brother, Gaetano (Salvatore Esposito), who has joined the family in Kansas City after building a reputation for ruthlessness in Italy. Amongst the turmoil, Patrick “Rabbi” Milligan (Ben Whishaw), a man who once betrayed his own family to serve the Italians, watches carefully to ensure his survival.

The fourth season of Fargo was scheduled to premiere in April, but production in Chicago halted due to the pandemic. Filming resumed in late August, making Fargo the first major production to restart filming in Chicago since the pandemic began.

As viewers gear up for the latest season, SBS On Demand will be dropping seasons one-three of standalone series Fargo this Thursday 17 September.

Fargo is joined by a diverse range of world-class drama series dropping on SBS On Demand throughout October. The first three seasons of Italian crime series Gomorrah will premiere on Friday 16 October.

Based on Robert Saviano’s bestselling tell-all book, Gomorrah is the inside story of the fierce and brutal Neapolitan crime-syndicate, Camorra. The first season of Gomorrah was filmed over 30 weeks. 156 locations were used to shoot indoor scenes, and outdoor filming locations include Milan, Ferrara, Rome, Ventimiglia and Barcelona. Season one of Gomorrah will also air on SBS World Movies, premiering Sunday 18 October at 8:30pm.

Season one of noir thriller Briarpatch will be available on SBS On Demand from Thursday 1 October. Based on the award-winning novel of the same name, Briarpatch follows investigator Allegra ‘Pick’ Dill (Rosario Dawson) as she returns to her hometown after the murder of her sister. Allegra’s relentless search for the killer pits her against powerful enemies as she fights for the truth in a corrupt town brimming with lies. Praised by Vulture as “colorful and distinctive”, Briarpatch is a stylish blend of comedy and crime and will appeal to fans of Fargo.

Season one of Canadian medical drama Transplant, and seasons one-ten of iconic British spy drama Spooks will drop on SBS On Demand on Thursday 8 October. Transplant follows Syrian doctor Dr. Bashir Hamed, a refugee with an elusive past, as he joins a team of doctors and is determined to make a place for himself in a new hospital and country. Starring Matthew Macfadyen and Keeley Hawes, Spooks centres around a counterterrorism unit in the UK, based in the highly secure suite of offices called The Grid where Harry Pearce oversees the team and deals with the dirty politics of the spy game.

The first season of science-fiction comedy series Vagrant Queen will be available on SBS VICELAND and SBS On Demand weekly from Friday 16 October. Former child queen Elida has been on the run since her mother was shot and killed by Commander Lazaro, the man responsible for bringing down their empire. A highly skilled fighter, Elida has been living in hiding and making ends meet as a scavenger while the unhinged Lazaro obsesses over tracking her down. When Elida’s old frenemy Isaac shows up with news that her mother is still alive, it takes the help of the technically savvy and optimistic Amae to escape Lazaro’s army and begin the rescue mission across the galaxy.

Plus, season one of French drama Apnea and Italian crime series Petra will be available on SBS On Demand on Thursday 22 October and Thursday 29 October respectively. In sensual miniseries Apnea, a Mediterranean island is rocked by a series of suspicious deaths with a dark and mythic nature.

Procedural drama series Petra brings to life the iconic and unconventional detective from Alicia Giménez Bartlett’s bestselling novels. A twice-divorced sleuth working a tiresome desk job for Genoa’s criminal investigation squad, Petra is suddenly thrust onto the front line and tasked with solving violent crimes.
