Strong field set for Fred Best Classic on huge day of racing on Seven

The Brisbane Winter Carnival continues to heat up on Seven with the Group 3 Fred Best Classic headlining a tantalising card at Doomben on Saturday.

Race fans can also catch all the action from Caulfield and Rosehill Gardens.

Dawn Passage heads a star-studded field of three-year-olds in the 1350m feature at Doomben, having won the Hawkesbury Guineas and Inglis Guineas in his two last starts.

Victory would earn the Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained colt a prized spot in next Saturday’s Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap, but he faces stiff opposition from Godolphin filly Exhilarates, Chris Waller’s Subpoenaed, Grand Piano and The Odyssey.

Australia’s pre-eminent broadcaster Bruce McAvaney will lead Seven’s coverage on Saturday alongside Hamish McLachlan, Henry Dwyer and Katelyn Mallyon.

The other highlights on Chairman’s Cup Day at Doomben include the Group 3 Chairman’s Handicap (2000m) and the Listed Helen Coughlan Stakes (1200m), the latter race also earning its winner ballot exemption into the Stradbroke Handicap.

At Rosehill on Saturday, the Lord Mayor’s Cup (Listed, 2000m) headlines a big day of racing, with emergency Bottega set to jump as favourite if he gets a start, with Dr Drill, Sixties Groove, Yulong Prince and Ilwendo among the other leading contenders.

And a nine-race card at Caulfield includes the Nick Johnstone Real Estate Classic (1600m), where the Mick Price-Michael Kent stable will field the top three fancies in Right You Are, Smoke Bomb and Librate.
