This week on Taronga: Who’s Who in the Zoo, we see firsthand the devastating effect the recent bushfires are having on our wildlife population.
In an emotion-charged episode at 7.00pm Saturday on Nine, the zoo’s vets, keepers and staff answer the calls for help however they can.
Narrated by Naomi Watts, this fascinating new documentary series is giving viewers a behind-the-scenes look at what it takes to run one of the world’s most famous and magnificent zoos.
Watts said: “More than one billion animals are thought to have been killed in Australia’s bushfires, which is beyond devastating. What is beautiful is to see everyone coming together for support in different ways.”
Episode Two
We follow Taronga Zoo vet Kimberly as she travels to the bushfire frontline in Bairnsdale, Victoria in a desperate effort to save injured wildlife. Working from a mobile animal hospital, Kimberly becomes concerned over a koala whose body starts to give up.
Back at the zoo, keepers prepare to home 12 koalas who have been rescued from the line of fire. See how Taronga plans to house and feed their new guests. Meanwhile, head vet Larry makes a house call to 16-year-old Murphy, a 300kg California sea lion who is in pain with a bad limp. Plus, see what happens when a goat and a gorilla come face-to-face.
