Channel 9 has announced its new Head Of Sport after incumbent TOM MALONE moved across to Macquarie Radio.
In an e-mail sent out to staff today, News boss Darren Wick advised Brent Williams would be assuming the role. Williams has an impressive resume working across Nine’s sport coverage for 25 years as well as some of Australia’s most iconic shows.
For the past eight years he has been the executive producer of the TV Week Logie Awards.
In his e-mail Wick says;
Cutting his teeth on the iconic “Hey Hey It’s Saturday”, a job where literally everything, including the kitchen sink, was thrown at him, Brent has excelled at each and every challenge sent his way.
He’s been the executive producer of the TV Week Logie Awards for the past eight years, the executive producer of Carols by Candlelight, the executive producer of the London Summer Olympics and the Vancouver Winter Games, the head of Tennis for Nine and the Head of Cricket.
He has also run the AFL Footy Show, the Sunday Footy Show, Footy Classified and was the match producer of AFL when Nine had broadcast rights in the early 2000’s.
This experience and passion for live sport will enable Brent to add another dimension to the extensive coverage and prominence in our schedule of the NRL, with the biggest moments of State of Origin and Rugby League’s Grand Final annually among the most watched events on TV.
According to Wick, Williams is highly respected and very popular with his colleagues;
“His style of management favours close collaboration, innovation and motivation.”
The appointment will take effect immediately and a newly aligned management structure will see him report directly to Wick so that Nine Sport and News can collaborate closely on major projects.
Williams is a self-described “sports tragic” who is excited about his new role which he describes as his “dream job”;
“Wide World of Sports is an iconic brand in broadcasting, thanks to the incredibly talented and dedicated WWOS family over many years. I’m lucky to already be a member of that family and know first-hand the pride, passion and responsibility that comes with any product branded with the famous WWOS logo.
“It’s an honour to be leading the team and I look forward to driving the evolution of Nine’s sports broadcasting and broader sports strategy into the future.”
