Fans of the hugely popular prison drama Wentworth are beginning to celebrate today amid fresh reports the show is expected to be renewed for two additional seasons.
David Knox at from the website TVTonight is reporting a deal has been done between FremantleMedia and Foxtel to produce an additional 20 episodes. If correct, the new deal would allow for two more additional seasons (Season 8 and Season 9) and likely keep the popular drama on our screens until 2021.
Foxtel currently has 10 episodes (Season 7) of Wentworth already in the can, which will air on the pay-tv broadcaster in 2019. The expected renewal is good news for fans, after rumours circulated earlier this year Foxtel had made the decision not to continue with the program due to rising costs.
A spokesperson for Foxtel declined to confirm the report telling DeciderTV the company was making; “no announcement on Wentworth at this stage.”
The production house behind Wentworth, FremantleMedia also refused to comment when contacted by DeciderTV yesterday, however CEO, Chris Oliver-Taylor stated in September the business; “was working closely with Foxtel as well as writers and cast to see what opportunities there are for a series 8. We know that our amazing audience both here in Australia and in the 140 territories that Wentworth plays in are eager for another season.”
