Hugh Riminton is leaving Network 10 after 17 years with the network, announcing his departure to colleagues this morning.
The veteran journalist will finish with Network 10 on October 2, bringing an end to a career in daily news that began when he was 17 as a cadet reporter.
Now 65, Riminton said that after 48 years in daily news, “it is probably enough”, while reflecting on a career that has taken him around the world.
In an email seen by TV Blackbox, Riminton said he plans to spend the coming weeks supporting his son as he completes his HSC, as well as spending time with his father, who is approaching his 98th birthday.
“Every hour is precious,” he wrote.
Riminton also indicated that he expects further projects to emerge in the months ahead, while thanking his colleagues for the past 17 years.
“There is no one among you I am not proud to work alongside,” he said.
Riminton joined Network 10 in 2009 following five years with CNN and more than a decade with the Nine Network.
During his time at 10, he has taken on a range of roles, including political editor and Canberra bureau chief, before moving to Sydney to co-present the 5pm news with Sandra Sully.
He has also hosted Meet The Press and Revealed, while reporting from Australia and overseas and contributing to programs including The Project.
In 2019, Riminton was appointed Network 10’s national affairs editor, a role that saw him report across 10 News, The Project and other network programming.
10 News VP News Martin White told staff he was “sad” to see Riminton leave, while describing his career as an achievement “few of us can comprehend, let alone get close to”.
“Hugh is one of the finest journalists this country has produced – a reporter of integrity, intellect and humanity. His work has informed Australians through some of the biggest stories of our time, and his presence in our newsroom has been a privilege for all of us at 10 News.”
White also indicated Riminton could continue to contribute to Network 10 in the future.
“I’ve told Hugh he won’t be gone for good. I thoroughly intend to sub him in for elections, major events and the like.”
Network 10 President and Head of Streaming Beverley McGarvey also paid tribute to Riminton, describing his contribution to the network and Australian journalism as significant.
“Hugh Riminton leaves an indelible mark on Network 10 and on news journalism in Australia. Across an exceptional career, he has reported with courage, clarity and compassion, earning the trust of audiences and the respect of peers across the industry.”
McGarvey thanked Riminton for his “extraordinary service, leadership and friendship”, saying he leaves with the network’s “deepest admiration and gratitude”.
