Former Sunrise sports presenter Mark Beretta is taking the next step in his media career, launching his own podcast series with some of Australia’s biggest names already lined up to join him.

After departing Sunrise last year, Beretta is launching Beretts’ Best today, with former co-host David Koch and Karl Stefanovic appearing together for the first time in the opening episode.

The pairing is a particularly notable one, with Koch and Stefanovic having spent more than two decades at the top of Australia’s breakfast television landscape, albeit on rival networks.

For Beretta, the podcast offers a chance to do something that simply isn’t possible in a traditional television interview — take his time and properly explore the stories behind his guests.

I love chatting to people. I love exploring their stories,” Beretta says in a teaser for the series, explaining that the three-minute interviews he was used to on television “doesn’t give you a chance to tell a really great story”.

“Now we really burrow down and it’s pretty awesome to hear some of these incredible stories and the bits that we haven’t heard before.”

The first season will feature a mix of sporting and television personalities, with Olympic swimmer Michael Klim, cricketer Nathan Lyon, rugby league identity Matty Johns, cyclist Grace Brown and neurosurgeon Dr Charlie Teo among the guests.

Beretta’s move also comes as a number of high-profile Australian media personalities have launched their own podcasts and digital ventures outside the traditional television model, including Stefanovic and Kyle Sandilands.

After 22 years on the Sunrise couch, Beretta is now taking his next step with his own podcast — watch a teaser in the player below.

Beretts’ Best launches today, Monday September 14, with new episodes to follow every Monday.
