Netflix unveils eerie desert mystery The Boroughs starring Geena Davis, Bill Pullman and Alfred Molina
A quiet retirement community in the New Mexico desert becomes the centre of a chilling mystery in The Boroughs, a new Netflix series starring Geena Davis, Bill Pullman and Alfred Molina.
Set against a sunlit but unsettling backdrop, the story follows newcomer Sam Cooper (Molina), who arrives expecting a peaceful life but instead finds something far more sinister lurking beneath the surface. After a frightening encounter at night, Sam becomes convinced a monstrous presence is stalking the neighbourhood.
His claims are brushed off by authorities, who dismiss him as confused. But Sam refuses to back down, forming an unlikely alliance with a group of fellow residents who each bring their own skills and scepticism to the table.
Among them are a former journalist, a spiritual seeker, a music manager and a doctor, all of whom have been underestimated in their own ways. Together, they begin to dig into the secrets of their seemingly idyllic surroundings.
The series explores how this overlooked group bands together to uncover the truth, as danger closes in and time begins to run out.
Created by Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews, The Boroughs also counts The Duffer Brothers, Hilary Leavitt and Ben Taylor among its executive producers. Direction across the eight-episode run is shared by Ben Taylor, Augustine Frizzell and Kyle Patrick Alvarez.
The ensemble cast features Geena Davis, Alfre Woodard, Denis O’Hare, Clarke Peters, Bill Pullman, Carlos Miranda, Jena Malone, Seth Numrich and Alice Kremelberg, alongside additional appearances from Ed Begley Jr., Dee Wallace, Eric Edelstein, Rafael Casal, Mousa Hussein Kraish, Beth Bailey, Karan Soni and Jane Kaczmarek.
Filmed in Albuquerque, New Mexico, the series blends mystery and suspense with an exploration of ageing, grief and resilience, as its characters confront threats that challenge both their safety and their sense of self.
