Filming has begun in New Zealand for Netflix’s East of Eden series, with Garth Davis at the helm and a stellar cast led by Florence Pugh.
Filming is now underway for the Netflix adaptation of John Steinbeck’s iconic novel, East of Eden, with production taking place across various locations in New Zealand.
The seven-episode limited series offers a contemporary take on Steinbeck’s multi-generational tale, with a focus on the complex dynamics within the Trask family. The show aims to shine new light on the unforgettable character of Cathy Ames, the novel’s central antihero.
Directing the first four episodes and serving as an executive producer is Garth Davis, known for his work on Lion and Mary Magdalene. The cast features prominent names from recent acclaimed projects. Florence Pugh (Oppenheimer, Little Women) will portray Cathy Ames, a character renowned for her manipulation and cruelty.
Christopher Abbott (Catch-22) takes on the role of Adam Trask, while Mike Faist (West Side Story) will play his brother, Charles Trask. Hoon Lee (Warrior) has been cast as Lee, a central figure offering wisdom and moral support to the Trask family. Other notable cast members include Tracy Letts (Winning Time) as Cyrus Trask, Martha Plimpton (The Good Wife) as Faye, and Ciarán Hinds (Belfast) as Samuel Hamilton.
The series also introduces younger actors Joseph Zada (We Were Liars) as Cal Trask and Joe Anders (I Am Ruth) as Aron Trask.
The project boasts an impressive creative team. Zoe Kazan, granddaughter of Elia Kazan—who directed the 1955 film adaptation of East of Eden—is the co-showrunner, writer, and executive producer. Kazan’s involvement adds a layer of legacy to the production, while Jeb Stuart (Die Hard) joins as co-showrunner and executive producer. The final three episodes will be directed by Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre (Lady Chatterley’s Lover), who also serves as an executive producer.
The series is being co-produced by Fifth Season and Anonymous Content, with additional executive producers including Antoine Douiahy (Archive 81) and Zack Hayden. East of Eden is scheduled for release on Netflix in 2025.
