Planned for broadcast during Mardi Gras, ABC’s Drag story time at Rockdale Library is called off.

The ABC has cancelled a planned Drag story time event intended for filming on February 22, 2024, at Rockdale Library in southern Sydney, following significant online backlash.

The event, which was to feature in the 2024 Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras broadcast, aimed at children aged three to five, sparked controversy after being targeted by far-right groups and individuals.

In a statement, the ABC expressed its intention to showcase the diversity of the LGBTQIA+ community through the event as part of its coverage of the Mardi Gras, for which it serves as the official broadcaster. The corporation emphasized its commitment to reflecting the broad spectrum of Australian society, in line with its Charter obligations.

However, following the dissemination of event details by fringe groups, the ABC faced a barrage of “hateful and offensive” reactions. This led to the decision to cancel the event’s scheduling at Rockdale Library, with the broadcaster now exploring alternative ways to conduct the event safely.

In condemning the negative response, the ABC reaffirmed its dedication to inclusivity and the representation of all Australians, while seeking solutions to uphold these values amidst challenging circumstances.

“The ABC condemns the hateful and offensive response we have received from some individuals in response to the callout for this event. The event will no longer be held at the Rockdale Library and the ABC is considering how we can safely host it,”

“The ABC invited families from within the LGBTQIA+ community to participate in a Drag Queen Story Time event which would be filmed as part of our Mardi Gras coverage. These events are designed for families and are regularly held in public spaces.”

“The ABC is the official host broadcaster for the 2024 Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras. As part of this partnership the ABC showcases the diversity of the LGBTQIA+ community, aligning with its Charter obligation to reflect all Australians.”

The controversy surrounding the Drag story time event is part of a larger pattern of opposition faced by similar LGBTQIA+ events across Australia, with recent cancellations also occurring in Melbourne and Sydney.

This backlash has often been fueled by neo-Nazi factions, far-right groups, and some conservative political figures, who have targeted these inclusive community gatherings.
