Nicole Kidman is set to grace Australia with her presence at the Palace Verona Cinema in Sydney.

This visit marks a significant event: the special advance screening of her new series on Prime Video, Expats. Scheduled for Wednesday, 20 December, this occasion is particularly notable as Kidman had inaugurated the Verona Cinema back in 1996. Her return for the Expats screening offers a nostalgic touch, coinciding with the venue’s upcoming closure in early 2024.

Expats is a six-part limited series, showcasing the directorial prowess of Lulu Wang. Co-executive produced by Kidman, the series is an adaptation of the bestselling novel The Expatriates by Janice Y. K. Lee. Its global premiere on Prime Video is slated for 26 January 2024, making it accessible in over 240 countries and territories. This addition enriches the offerings for Prime members, who already enjoy various benefits, including savings and entertainment.

The series features an impressive cast alongside Nicole Kidman. It includes Sarayu Blue, known for her roles in Never Have I Ever and Blockers, Ji-young Yoo from The Sky Is Everywhere, Brian Tee of Chicago Med fame, and Jack Huston, notable for his work in House of Gucci and Fargo.

Set in the dynamic backdrop of 2014 Hong Kong, Expats explores the lives of three American women – Margaret (played by Kidman), Hilary (Blue), and Mercy (Yoo) – who find their paths intertwined following a family tragedy. The narrative delves into themes of privilege and the complexities of victimhood and culpability. Tee and Huston add depth to the story, portraying the husbands of Margaret and Hilary, respectively.

Behind the scenes, Lulu Wang has been instrumental as the creator, director, and writer of Expats. Collaborating with Daniele Melia for Local Time, Wang and Kidman lead the executive production team. The series also benefits from the creative input of Australian screenwriter Alice Bell, known for The Beautiful Lie and The Slap.

The production team further includes Theresa Park of Per Capita Productions, and Stan Wlodkowski, renowned for The Old Guard. Contributing to the series’ narrative alongside Wang and Bell are writers Vera Miao, Gursimran Sandhu, and the novel’s author, Janice Y. K. Lee.

Expats promises to be a captivating addition to Prime Video’s roster, blending stellar performances with intricate storytelling, set against a vibrant Hong Kong canvas.
