Channel 9’s Beloved ‘Millionaire Hot Seat’ Bids Farewell with Final Original Episode

Channel 9 has confirmed that the final new episode of the iconic quiz show Millionaire Hot Seat will be broadcast this Wednesday afternoon. This marks a poignant end to a show that has been a staple in Australian homes for many years.

Host Eddie McGuire, who has been synonymous with the show, shared his thoughts on this transition telling News Corp.

It is (the last episode) of this run. We are at pains to say it (Hot Seat) is going into hiatus because I think it will come back at some stage, whether it is with me (as host) or not, time will tell,”

McGuire stated. He reflected on the journey, expressing,

For me the whole Who Wants To Be A Millionaire/Hot Seat experience has just been a total joy. It has been part of my life for 25 years.

Despite the conclusion of new episodes, fans can still enjoy the show over the summer, as Channel 9 plans to air reruns until the commencement of the Australian Open on January 14.

Looking ahead to 2024, Channel 9 is set to introduce an Australian edition of the popular quiz show Tipping Point. McGuire extended his best wishes to Todd Woodbridge, the upcoming host of Tipping Point Australia, the show slated to replace Hot Seat.

Millionaire Hot Seat, which celebrated its 2500th episode earlier this year, began as Who Wants to be a Millionaire? in 1999 with McGuire at the helm. It evolved into the Hot Seat format in 2009 and expanded to a one-hour format in 2017, partly in response to the popularity of Channel 7’s The Chase.

Reflecting on his initial foray into hosting the show, McGuire shared his experiences of overcoming skepticism.

I had people saying to me you can’t do that you are a journalist, but similarly I was told don’t go into TV, don’t go into radio, don’t be the president of Collingwood and don’t do a sports show at night, they don’t work. So we were on a bit of a roll of breaking stereotypes at that stage.

I remember going down to Grundy’s with Michael Whyte and he auditioned me. Suddenly, ‘I need a lifeline’, ‘Lock it in, Eddie’, and ‘Is that your final answer?’, all those sayings became part of the vernacular in Australia. It was part of a complete social zeitgeist at the time,”

Michael Healy, Director of Television at Nine, praised the show’s impact.

Long-term fan favourite Millionaire Hot Seat, and its predecessor, Who Wants To Be A Millionaire, have been fundamental pillars in our Channel 9 schedule for 24 years.

For the past two and a half decades Eddie McGuire has made the show come to life, uncovered the great stories of our contestants, and has had the pleasure of handing over total prize money of more than $90 million.

We thank him for his commitment to the show over those years and for the shows still to come, and look forward to continuing our successful partnership with Eddie into the future.

  1. Thankgoodness!
Put a new uk game show on, so we got 3!
Bradley walsh and blankety blanks would be perfect!
    Channel 9

  2. Cancelling the show is crazy. It is the only one worth watching on TV. It would never have happened with Kerry Packer at the helm.

    • It worked as a Sex and the City Lead in on Monday Nights in the early years but that era is long gone. This goes back to the days when SBS Mondays between 8:30pm and 9:30pm were Comedies and Cartoons of all sorts.4pm to 5pm when I was growing up was a kids show between 4pm and 5pm and Looney Tunes or assorted sitcoms to get us to the news(of course I have not forgotten the Price is Right).Maybe it would have survived with Ed Phillips as host after that God awful two and a half men replaced Temptation as 9’s 7pm weeknight offering post 2009.

  3. It was like pulling teeth .
He turned asking a bloody question into a miniseries.
From the time he asked viewers had time to boil the jug make coffee, and still make it back for a two minute wait.BORING
    Also he bullshitted to viewers
I will give you a cheque now and you can cash it on the way home .
No way the show is pre- recorded no contested get any prizes unless it aired .

    • That was the biggest Pile off Junk when Kerry Packer was in Charge of 9 in the Nineties they used as a Cheers replacement on Thursday Nights from memory after the long running sitcom that existed between 1982 and 1993 finished production for good towards the end of that year.I would have expected better for those of us who don’t care for Football.

  4. Long past the use by, almost costed Nine its news dominance on the east coast. It’s why it finally got the chop.

  5. Another example of”Eddie Everywhere” becoming increasingly irrelevant. Watching this show was a riveting as watching paint dry.

    • Ian Baxter Jason Richardson is another that springs up from horse racing to women’s cricket as a so called expert .

    • Ian Baxter why did you watch it then . The lonely elderly that live on their own or in nursing homes loved it as it’s all they had to look forward to each day .

    • Patricia GadenI Agree, it keeps people on the boil, trying to answer the questions, maybe the questions are to hard for some of the brain dead people that make negative comments about the show.

    • George Barlow exactly . Well said . My brother is in a nursing home , his blind , but he listens to Eddie everyday as he said it keeps his brain stimulated. Maybe those with negative comments should go the same before they end up brain dead .

    • Patricia Gaden I never intentionally watched it. The only time I saw it was when I was visiting my father, who used to watch it every day.

    • Ian Baxter so if that’s the case , and you never watched the show , proves that you are commenting on a TV Show that you know nothing about . Maybe go and do some painting and watch it dry as it seems thats all that you are capable of , and leave Eddie alone . …

  6. Good riddance for this great news
    Seriously seriously seriously seriously
Eddie Maguire expire date on million dollar hot seat was way over due time to move on Eddie Maguire seriously time to go
    Us ta la vista Eddie

  7. I loved this show answering questions ill miss it so are they going to put something bloody rude violent on in its place

  8. Love love love Eddie . One of our best . Sure gonna miss the show . But Eddie has got bigger and better things to do with his life .❤️💕 well done Eddie

  9. Eddie makes the show , he has a great personality which is hard to beat, I have watched this show every night for years and will definitely miss it .

    • Kevin Cartlidge Dont know about that. He’s actually quite rude. When he was chairman of the melbourne stars, I was in the VIP area and he was at the podium making a speech and he said to people “Dont talk when I am talking” in a rather aggressive tone. And in terms of great personality – look what he did to Adam Goodes at Triple M calling him an ape. My opinion, you most likely will disagree

    • Paul Foley same type of show. I will give it 8 weeks and news ratings will drop so much tipping point will be no more
      Watch this space

    • I agree there.Eddies face everywhere is as Nauseating as seeing Scott Cam on the ads for the Block and the Mitre 10 ads.How many of us will stay up on Mondays for Footy Classified as we all have work the next day.

  10. Will miss the show with Eddie love ❤️ the millionaire show hot seat always at 5 Good Luck

  11. So they get rid of a great show and replace it with probably the most boring thing ever.. tipping point… really!!! Why not just replace the host if eddie wants to step down

    • Sandra Gore hate to tell you, they are bringing in an Australian version. Probably to replace this program. What a backward step.

  12. And only four people who actually won the $1 million across both “Classic” and “Hot Seat” formats.

  13. I guess I am the odd one out. Never liked the show, never ever watched more than about five minutes of any episode, Glad to see that it has finally been recognised as having had its run and it is going.

    • it lasted as long as it did.what they should and could have done was offer cars, holidays, cash, lounge suites and luggage and home furniture(similar to temptation and before that sale of the century)in addition to the cash with only a three contestants a night format.the winner stays as long as he can or can go home and the others if and when they get their prizes goes home and new people are shown daily.also a pleasing to the eye presenter like we saw with Tony Barber,Glenn Ridge and Ed Phillips would go a long way.

  14. Why how about taking some of the rubbish off instead I watch it every day then change over to pay TV because free to air TV is rubbish & 2 many adds

  15. Eddie id the best presenter I have ever seen. Simply brilliant. Very sad this show is off the air. Watch it every day. Will miss it immensely.

    • Lynette Peters we will to ,,just love Eddie ,Always the gentleman to everyone ,we miss you heaps ,,

    • Carmen I was always going to apply to go on the show. About 14 years ago I auditioned by phone twice and you weren’t told if you had the questions correct or not and if you were successful they would let you know by the following Thursday but I didn’t ever hear. Now I will never be going on it!

    • Tricia Thomas nothing worth while watching in other Chanel’s , my favourite millionaire hot sit , current affair , and the news .

  16. There is no one that can replace Eddie Maguire a tragic loss cancelling his show depended on it to keep me up to date with everyday knowledge surely Chanel 9 must realize the loss to afternoon television nothing left for us oldies now bad decision by 9 why copy an English show with Tipping Point thank you Eddie you are an icon !!!

  17. It should have gone years ago, just my opinion, only watched the first half hour then switch to The Chase on 7.

  18. Maybe one day, a television station could bring back the old Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? which was much better than this Hotseat garbage.
The old one was fair game and every contestant had a shot at winning $1,000,000.00
In this one, the prize devalued when a contestant got a question wrong.

    • You are not the only one.I am fortunate not to be home when this show airs(I finish work at 4pm)or I leave life ed by 3:15pm twice a week and try find a Gym which shows music videos or has the bold and the beautiful and neighbours on while doing my work out in either case.

  19. Sorry to see you go I so look forward watching millionaire hot .seat all the best Eddie Judith O’Brien

  20. I’m going ti Miss been watching since it Started I don’t about the Chase I watch ABCEnjoy watching a lot And I do like Eddie Mc quire his alway so nice very
    Educational to everyone😔

  21. Good riddance I don’t watch but one more nail in Eddie Everywhere’s appearance is a good thing

  22. I stopped watching about 4 months ago ‘ I loved the show but since he did something to his teeth ‘ he whistles when he talks ‘ his S ‘ ssssso here we go ‘ what sssstyle of hair is a mullet ‘ sssssue got it right ‘ well done sssue
    You know what I’m sssssaying

  23. Congratulations Eddie, Great Show, Great Host, You always kept it Interesting and I always enjoyed the way you chatted with the Contestants and showed you really Cared, being Compassionate when needed was a big plus. Strange how most Negative posts are from Men.Whatever you do you are an amazing Perfectionist 👏.

    • I enjoyed it too. I hope it comes back on another network. I liked how he really cared, as you said. I don’t like the Chase because of the “suspense” waiting for the answer and I find Tipping Point quite boring. I did like finding out a little about each contestant and went with a friend in the audience once – very enjoyable

  24. This is VERY sad. There are MILLIONS of people, like me who ONLY watch Channel 9 for this show. It is engaging, challenging, informative and good fun. A great respite from the horror of the news and a family event to share one’s own knowledge and educate our young children and grandchildren. I also happen to watch the Tipping Point Game from UK which is interesting BUT not nearly as good as Hot Seat with Eddie. I have a feeling that the decision rests on the MONEY? Tipping Point will not cost the broadcaster Millions, just hundreds! As it happens Todd Woodbridge was student of mine and I wish him well – he will be an excellent host. I’d rather he hosted “Who wants to be a Millionaire” with Eddie?

  25. well now eddie cant cheat on the show like hes been doing example a player gives an answer to lock in eddie does not lock in straight away he pauses when there big money involved you lock answwers in straight away

  26. Never missed a show ,shows like this keep our minds active and are more beneficial to viewers than all the reality garbage shows. Most of us have a “reality” show of our own so why so

  27. Thanks Eddie for the great show hope you get the gig for the next one replacing it ? Australian tipping point

  28. Thank Christ I can’t stand that Eddie if they bring it back I hope for Christ sake they find someone else

    • Not a reality show as such but i wouldn’t be surprised if we go back a few decades to have some kids shows or cartoons prior to the news but for a new age audience.

  29. Sorry to hear this. Have watched this show forever, always testing my knowledge. Thanks for a great job Eddie.

    • We will miss Eddie and show. Such a stimulating brain show! My husband and I watch every day!😔

  30. Another bad decision by Channel Nine, along with the axing of top radio hosts on Brisbane’s 4BC. I always, always watch Millionaire, leading into the news. Who and what next.

  31. Will miss this show watch it most nights. Only show I watch no TV 📺 for me now mainly Disney channel.

  32. Well that’s sad TV will replace this show with a horror realty show & that’s not. When this was a really good show.

  33. Oh no, my favourite show but on the other hand nothing lasts forever.Eddie was a great host and kept the show alive. Will miss the show.

    • True.I remembered when he became CEO OF 9.Out went that Temptation game show and in went two and a half men.Our intelligence and what should have been 3 decades of game shows dating back to 1980 with Sale of the Century was gone overnight.I would rather my brain getting smarter than say Jon Cryer and Charlie Sheen making us dumber.

  34. Will miss watching the show! Would sit down with a glass of wine and try and answer the questions!

  35. I was watching this on the anniversary of my Baptism which was on this day in 2009
and I answered all fifteen questions correctly and my Canary who had not whistled for two years started to sing for a few seconds. That’s one reason I will not forget Millionaire hot seat

  36. Thank Christ …never watched it. How could anyone with a functioning brain. Eddie is a moron. Jenny

  37. Such a shame, love the program & something light hearted & older people enjoy! A program with no violence & fun to watch!

  38. Thank fuck for that no more big head I’m the greatest Eddie know it all if I don’t I’ll make it up

  39. I’m going to miss this Show so very much And a big thankyou to Eddie. He was a great host, always looked forward to it at 5pm. I felt I really got to know Eddie, he loved it when the contestants did well, and was sad to see them lose. Miss you and the Show, Eddie.

  40. 5pm will not be the same. My husband and I watched this show for years. Will certainly miss Eddie. It was entertaining and knowledgeable. Sorry to see it go. Best Wishes Ed!

  41. Should not be happening. The show should not have been axed. The Programmers are fools people loved this show and Eddy you were really good. TV has had its day only good for news. No wonder more and more people l e are turning to Pay TV. Reality reality sick to death of it. TV decision makers you have no idea.

  42. So sad will miss you Eddie such a nice man, good luck and a very happy Christmas to you and your family.

  43. Not fair for the ones of us who enjoyed the challenge of answering the questions we miss out opposed to who didn’t.

    • 4pm for the rest of Australia 5pm in Darwin and the NT.I only wish they was a channel with something light from this decade and a comedy. If it was up to me I would rather Channel 92 got with the times and showed a Double Dose of Mom or Two broke girls instead of relying on that god awful bewitched and I dream of Jeannie that has been milked to death a million times over.

  44. Will miss Eddie’s Show. Rush to prep.dinner so can watch it with glass of Wine testing my mind answering questions.Love Eddie.❤️

  45. I don’t understand! Why would they stop a show that people love watching? I don’t get it .Will be missed though

  46. Tipping Point is not my cup of tea. I’d rather watch repeats of Sale of the Century instead of this Tipping Point game show. I have a gut feeling that Tipping Point will not last long.

    • Or better than that Temptation.I curse the day Two and a Half Men replaced it as 9’s 7pm offering 15 years ago.

  47. I will so miss this shows glass of wine 🍷 while preparing Vegetables for dinner and trying to answer the questions

  48. I can’t believe our whole family won’t be able to enjoy Eddie at 5pm weekdays.
What kind of second rate English TV copy is Tipping Point – we won’t watch.
A very nice bloke but Todd Woodbridge has no personality!! Really!!!😖
