7NEWS claims Top Spot in Australia’s 2023 TV ratings

The Seven Network’s 7NEWS has claimed victory as the most-watched news program in Australia, claiming the #1 spot every week so far in 2023 and establishing its biggest lead since 2019.

Distributing 162 bulletins each week, 7NEWS recorded high viewership in Melbourne, Victoria, NSW, Queensland, Adelaide, South Australia, Perth, Western Australia, and Tasmania. The numbers in Sydney showed a marginal difference of 5,000 viewers or 2%, while Brisbane’s figures were closely matched with a difference of just 1,000 viewers nightly.

During the weekdays, 7NEWS reported an average of 1.36 million national viewers. In metropolitan areas, 7NEWS Monday to Friday recorded an average audience of 1.32 million.

Yearly comparison indicates that 7NEWS Monday to Friday increased its audience share by 3.1 points in Sydney, 2.5 points in Melbourne, 2.0 points in Brisbane, and 5.6 points in Adelaide. In the capital cities, 7NEWS Monday to Friday achieved a 41.9% commercial share, with regional statistics suggesting a share of 47.3%.

On the weekend, the figures for 7NEWS remained high. 7NEWS Sunday reported an average viewership of 1.33 million, and 7NEWS Saturday documented an average of 1.05 million.

Commenting on the data, Craig McPherson, Seven’s Network Director of News and Public Affairs, said:

“It’s rewarding to see the performance of 7NEWS in 2023 across Australia and key markets.

Being a leading news source in the country instils a sense of responsibility in our teams, emphasising the importance of accurate and quality content, especially as we approach over 6,000 hours of broadcast news this year.”

Digitally, 7NEWS maintained a strong presence. Their Facebook account lists 12.3 million followers, with Instagram at 1.3 million and YouTube at 1.44 million. The vertical videos produced by the network have seen over 200 million views monthly across various platforms, including TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube. The year also marked growth in their digital community with YouTube subscribers and TikTok followers noting an increase.

7NEWS.com.au achieved notable metrics, with a significant number of page views recorded. The site’s lifestyle segment, 7Life, was highlighted by Ipsos iris during the first half of 2023. Video plays on 7NEWS.com.au saw a comparative increase from the previous year.

  1. No wonder channel 7 has it all over channel 9. I’m sorry to say that, for an afl station, it’s coverage of rugby league is so much better than ( the supposedly nrl station ) that is served up by channel 9. Get your act together, ch. 9.
