SBS Viceland is set to transport viewers across time and the Atlantic with their new six-part series, Viking Quest: America.
Set to premiere on Tuesday, September 12, at 8.30pm on SBS Viceland and SBS On Demand, the series seeks to explore the mystique and history surrounding the Vikings through a unique lens.
Led by a visionary billionaire, the series revolves around a team of archaeologists, medieval scholars, and boat builders who assemble in Norway. They converge to scrutinise the remnants of ancient Viking ships and pore over old Norse sagas.
Their collective aim is to design and construct an unprecedented Viking recreation vessel, the Draken, based on these historical references.
Episode one, titled A Dream is Born From History, delves into the ambitious project’s inception. It documents how the multinational crew is entrusted with the mission to retrace the renowned expeditions of Viking heroes like Leif Ericson and Eric the Red, reaching as far as Iceland, Greenland, and Newfoundland.
The second episode, The Trial of Trials, shifts its focus to the immediate hurdles facing the Draken even before it can set sail. The ship must pass rigorous inspections, causing the team to grapple with the balancing act of adhering to historical accuracy while also meeting modern safety regulations. This chapter unveils the ship’s sea trials and the challenges that arise once they make it past inspection and reach open water.
This unique docuseries promises to incorporate the latest in Viking research, offering fresh perspectives on their culture, history, and legendary sea expeditions. Don’t miss the opportunity to embark on this explorative journey, as Viking Quest: America premieres this Tuesday on SBS Viceland and SBS On Demand.
