The classic ’90s television show, ‘Gladiators’, is slated for a reboot in Australia, and TV Blackbox can now confirm Channel 10 will be the new home for the series.
Initially aired for two seasons in 1995 and 1996, the show had briefly resurfaced in 2008, and now it is ready to entertain a fresh generation of viewers.
The original series was recognised for its distinctive concept highlighting physical prowess and riveting challenges. The show’s return is now set to feature a mix of amateur contenders, who are at their physical peak, plus some interesting celebrity guests, ready to compete against a new generation of Gladiators.
TV Blackbox was the first to confirm the format was returning to Australia and now we can reveal the series will be finding a new at Channel 10.
A spokesperson for Channel 10Â declined to answer questions about the upcoming revival; the return of Gladiators is anticipated to be officially announced in the network’s upcoming 2024 Upfronts programming.
The reboot, set for filming in Sydney in September and October, brings back fond memories of the show, which during its prime held the attention of over two million Australians per episode on Channel 7.
The revival of ‘Gladiators’ on Australian shores coincides with the BBC’s filming of an updated version of the series for UK audiences. The BBC’s version plans to introduce new games alongside classic challenges, including the popular obstacle course, The Eliminator.
The classic 90’s series, originally hosted at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre, was guided by hosts Kimberley Joseph, Mike Hammond, and Aaron Pedersen, with Mike Whitney serving as referee. A 2008 reboot on Channel 7 featured hosts Tom Williams and Zoe Naylor, along with appearances from Tatiana Grigorieva, Tiffiny Hall and Anthony Koutoufides.
Warner Bros., the production company responsible for the reboot, has already started the recruitment process for participants.
The call for challengers specifies those who are in top physical condition and possess both speed and skill. The revitalised series aims to reprise its classic showdown of challengers against Gladiators in signature trials such as Powerball and Pyramid challenges.
