In this edition in our look at the finalists for the TV Boxies, we’re keeping things light with the Most Popular Light Entertainment category.
With Drama, Comedy, Panel, Lifestyle and Factual all marked off the list, it’s time to check out the Most Popular Light Entertainment finalists chosen by you at the TV Boxies.
Seven, Nine, the ABC and Foxtel all chalked up a nomination in this category, with some already featured in prior categories, hoping for a double-win at the TV Boxies on November 28.
MOST POPULAR LIGHT ENTERTAINMENT FINALISTS
TRAVEL GUIDES (Nine)
Already with a nomination in the Lifestyle category, Travel Guides features again in the Light Entertainment category.
Since 2017 this Aussie travel show has been go-to viewing on Nine, with five or so groups of everyday Australians experiencing the same holiday and rating their time out of five stars.
From a retired couple to cowgirls to restaurateurs, Travel Guides combines a diverse cast making for hilarious travel reviews.
It’s fun to watch and hard to turn off, Nine may just scoop up a win for Light Entertainment with this series.
THE FRONT BAR (Seven)
Another nominee that’s seen its face show up in another category, this time its the AFL-comedy Panel show The Front Bar, starring Andy Maher, Sam Pang and Mick Molloy.
From the jokes against Carlton and Richmond, the hilarious antics that come out of The Front Bar is what makes it appointment television for many AFL fans.
Known to join the panel on some occasions are Ryan ‘Fitzy’ Fitzgerald, Santo Cilauro and Marty Sheargold, bringing together even more funny faces to this already enjoyable program.
A win in the Light Entertainment category would be just as deserved as any other.
LOVE ON THE SPECTRUM (ABC)
This reality documentary show has captivated the world with a global release on Netflix, but the homegrown ABC series has been one of the most endearing to watch since it first premiered in 2019.
Love on the Spectrum sees various young adults on the autism spectrum on their own search for love, battling the trials and tribulations that come with dating and relationships just like any other.
The series has been widely acclaimed by both critics and its general audience, with Daniel Hart of Ready Steady Cut saying, “a reality series that helps to dispel some of the stigma surrounding autism is particularly welcome”.
After a successful season two airing earlier this year, Love on the Spectrum might be a favourite to take out the TV Boxie.
GOGGLEBOX AUSTRALIA (Foxtel)
People watching TV, who ever really knew this would be as much of a hit as it has been in Australia?
Nevertheless, Gogglebox Australia has been one of the most successful programming we’ve seen in recent years, with the show consistently pulling great numbers both on Foxtel and its free-to-air partner, 10.
From lovable households such as Mick & Di, Keith & Lee, the Dalton family and the Silbery family – Gogglebox Australia brings us all around the couch to watch just what others are thinking when they’re watching the same stuff we saw earlier in the week.
With four Logie wins from 2016-2019 and an AACTA pick up in 2020, could 2021 see Googlebox Australia take home an inaugural TV Boxie?
HARD QUIZ (ABC)
This comedy quiz show hosted by Tom Gleeson is a somewhat unsurprising consistent ratings winner on Wednesday nights.
Hard Quiz features four contestants, each of whom have selected a specialist subject area and are quizzed by Gleeson until one eventually wins the coveted, limited edition big brass mug.
If its popularity wasn’t enough to make it a real contender for the TV Boxie, who could forget when it was axed until Gleeson would win the Gold Logie in 2019?
Of course, Gleeson did win and the show was reinstated. Could we see a similar decision made if Hard Quiz doesn’t win the TV Boxie? Tommy, we’ll give you a call.
It’s time to take your pick in the Most Popular Light Entertainment category, along with all the rest in the voting poll below. And remember to tune in on November 28 to see who wins every single inaugural TV Boxie!
