Join Marc Fennell as he explores the incredible journey of the Western Sydney Wanderers in Came from Nowhere on SBS.
Came From Nowhere, a new feature-length documentary, will make its debut on SBS and SBS on Demand at 7.30pm on Sunday, 26 May 2024.
This film, led by the Walkley award-winning journalist Marc Fennell (known for Stuff The British Stole, The Mission, The Kingdom, Mastermind), explores the meteoric rise of the Western Sydney Wanderers. Remarkably, the club surged from nonexistence to clinching the AFC Asian Cup within just two years, marking the highest achievement an Australian club can attain in international football.
The documentary arrives on the heels of the tenth anniversary of the Western Sydney Wanderers‘ historic victory. It delves into the club’s early days and its establishment in western Sydney—Australian football’s heartland—seven years after the inception of the A-League.
Marc Fennell examines the fervent and occasionally controversial fanbase of the Wanderers, which quickly became the target of criticism from media shock-jocks, politicians, and law enforcement. The film sheds light on the ensuing cultural clash between the supporters from western Sydney and their detractors, posing the question: were these merely violent hooligans, or passionate football enthusiasts?
Came From Nowhere not only recounts this polarising saga but also touches on broader themes of socioeconomic disparities and the unifying power of football in forging community identity. It casts a spotlight on the role of sports in both celebrating and critiquing multiculturalism in Australia.
The documentary features insights from former players such as Ante Covic, Mark Bridge, Nikolai Topor-Stanley, and Shannon Cole. Viewers will also hear from superfan and former Australian Idol judge Ian “Dicko” Dickson, renowned broadcaster and former Socceroos captain Craig Foster, and John Tsatsimas, the CEO of Western Sydney Wanderers from 2014 to 2022.
“I was comfortably the worst left-back in the history of Year 8 soccer at my high school, so trust me, you’re not watching this for my football expertise.”
“When we first started looking at the origin of the Wanderers, I was shocked, if I’m being perfectly honest, that it hadn’t already been made into a Hollywood blockbuster years ago. This ragtag club went from having no name, no players, and no facilities to ultimately winning the highest championship in the region against teams backed by billionaires and royalty. It is the stuff of pure fairytales.”
“Came From Nowhere is about who we choose to mythologize and who gets left out of that story. It’s about a community drawn from all around the globe trying to build something new here in Australia, only to find that what they brought was not always welcome. But once upon a time in the western suburbs of Sydney, they created something together that has never been seen before nor likely to be repeated. It’s a rollercoaster, but it needs to be seen to be believed.”
Came From Nowhere not only chronicles a pivotal chapter in Australian football but also aids in understanding the nation’s complex relationship with the sport. As the popularity of soccer ascends in 2024, paralleled by the rise of the Matildas, the story of the Western Sydney Wanderers stands as a celebration of an underdog team that awakened a dormant giant and seized the ultimate accolade.
In a move to cater to diverse audiences, Came From Nowhere will be available with subtitles in Arabic, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Vietnamese, and Korean on SBS On Demand.
