MOST POPULAR FACTUAL PROGRAM FINALISTS

AUSTRALIAN STORY (ABC)

It’s ABC’s Monday night staple since 1996, with Australian Story notable for its profiling of various Australian people.

Formerly narrated by Caroline Jones until 2016, the show now lets authentic stories be told entirely in people’s own words in television, “guaranteed to make you think and feel”.

Australian Story has met with some of Australia’s most recognised people in its 25 years on TV, including Jana Pittman, Emma Watkins, Paul Hogan and Michael Caton.

With a few Logie wins in the past, Australian Story‘s raw subject matter and ability to capture the essence of some extraordinary Australians reminds us of just what our country is all about.

YOU CAN’T ASK THAT (ABC)

You Can’t Ask That aims to offer insight into the lives of marginalised communities and break down stereotypes while answering the questions people are afraid to ask.

Launching season six in 2021, the show produces a handful of compelling and interesting episodes each year.

From disaster survivors, to ex-Reality TV stars, to amputees, or to homeless people – You Can’t Ask That has featured a variety of groups from all walks of life.

Series director and producer, Kirk Docker, about the show said, “The input from the public is what makes this show. The blunter and more offensive the question, the more fun people have answering them”.

ANH’S BRUSH WITH FAME (ABC)

Hosted by comedian and accomplished artist, Anh Do, each episode brings in one celebrity and paints their portrait while having a chat about what makes them who they are, delving into the inspirational stories that have shaped their lives.

Famous faces such as Kate Richie, Adam Goodes, Jessica Mauboy and Kyle Sandilands have all appeared on the program.

Earlier this year, TV Blackbox exclusively reported the series may not return for another season in 2022 due to Do refusing to sign on for another. This was after controversy surrounded the show over the reveal that the portraits Do paints are done ahead of time, and not live as it seems.

However, the show has remained popular with viewers since its inception, clocking up four Logie nominations from 2017-2019.

OLD PEOPLE’S HOME FOR FOUR YEAR OLDS (ABC)

Despite only 10 episodes made over its two seasons produced, Old People’s Home for Four Year Olds has captured Australia’s attention for being gripping and heartwarming television.

Narrated by Annabel Crabb, the series is a unique social experiment that brings together elderly people in a retirement community with a group of four-year-olds.

The ABC documentary series’ Aged Health Care Expert, Professor Susan Kurrle explained why she thought the show was so appealing to audiences: “I think it was the spontaneity and the genuineness of it when you compare it to some of the other offerings on TV like My Kitchen Rules or The Bachelor or Married At First Sight. And it appealed right across the aged spectrum”.

Picking up a number of awards, including an AACTA and International Emmy, Old People’s Home for Four Year Olds has not yet been tested at the Logie Awards, and may make its mark at the TV Boxies.

OUTBACK TRUCKERS (7mate)

As the only non-ABC finalist in this category, Outback Truckers wrapped up its ninth season this year.

Screened around the world, the show presents Australia as a land of extremes and the Outback Truckers face those extremes on every job they do.

Driving the biggest trucks on earth along the toughest roads and loneliest highways in the world, out in the outback only one thing matters, getting there and back alive.

The series just recently picked up a nomination in the Screen Producers Australia awards, and may make its mark at the TV Boxies before reaching their tenth year milestone on TV in 2022.
