Continuing SBS’s long tradition of bringing provocative cult drama and comedy series to young Australian audiences, two hyped dramas are set to arrive direct from the US this March, with new anthology series HEATHERS and the highly anticipated follow-up season to the multi award-winning Atlanta, entitled ATLANTA: ROBBIN’ SEASON.
From the network that brought you beloved ground-breaking cult series like South Park, Skins, Queer as Folk, The Mighty Boosh, Black Mirror, Orphan Black and more, Heathers is a black comedy anthology set in the present day, based on the 1988 cult classic film of the same name. The much-anticipated reboot blends drama, love, rivalry and comedy into a confronting and audacious series.
With a cast of diverse young actors including Melanie Field, Brendan Scannell, Grace Victoria Cox and Jasmine Mathews, as well as original cast member Shannon Doherty, Heathers is a biting social commentary about growing up, and the flaws and contradictions that make us human – ‘good’ characters break bad, bullies prosper then falter. Heathers premieres on Paramount Network in the U.S. in March.
Coming to SBS On Demand and SBS VICELAND on Thursday 8 March, Heathers takes a satirical and unapologetic approach to many taboos and pokes fun at politically correct culture, with no topic off-limits.
Recently announced to be fast-tracked to SBS On Demand and SBS VICELAND is the highly anticipated new season of multi award-winning series Atlanta – Atlanta: Robbin’ Season. Lead by actor, writer, creator Donald Glover, Atlanta’s first season, which premiered in Australia on SBS VICELAND, was 2016’s critical darling, earning Golden Globe and Emmy awards. SBS VICELAND acquired both seasons from Fox Networks Group Content Distribution.
The new season continues to follow two cousins working through the Atlanta music scene in order to better their lives and the lives of their families. Earn Marks (Glover) is a young manager trying to get his cousin’s career off the ground, and Alfred Miles AKA Paper Boi (Brian Tyree Henry) is a hot new rapper trying to understand the line between real life and street life.
The program is at times hilarious and devastating, incisive and absurd as it explores race, gender, class and the pressures of young adult life.
