Today marks the end of the Sky News Australia name, with News24 officially taking its place across television, streaming and digital platforms in the biggest change to the channel since it launched more than 30 years ago.
While much of the schedule remains unchanged, News24 will also introduce Early First Edition, a new weekday bulletin airing from 5.00am. The new program premieres tomorrow, joining an expanded morning lineup that also sees AM Agenda extend to three hours from 9.00am.
Ahead of the launch, the channel’s Political Reporter and Anchor Julia Bradley revealed in a LinkedIn post she will co host Early First Edition on Mondays and Tuesdays, where she is expected to share hosting duties with Holly Stearnes, while continuing her role on the network’s politics round.
Beyond those changes, however, viewers will find much the same channel, with the existing mix of rolling news, opinion and prime time programming remaining largely unchanged under the new banner.
Familiar presenters and flagship programs including Credlin, The Bolt Report, Paul Murray Live and Outsiders all continue as part of the schedule.
News Corp has positioned the move as part of a broader push to transform the business into a multi platform news operation, backed by a rebuilt digital offering, new streaming products and growing international ambitions.
The rebrand also follows the reported expiry of the company’s long standing licence to use the Sky News name, with Sky, owned by US media giant Comcast, understood to have declined to renew the agreement.
In an open letter published on the News24 website ahead of today’s launch, Chief Executive Officer Paul Whittaker described the rebrand as “the next evolution” of Australia’s first 24 hour news channel, saying the new name better reflected both its heritage and ambitions for the future.
“News24 is the next chapter in our story, but the mission remains unchanged: to deliver trusted journalism, fearless opinion and world class coverage wherever and however our audience chooses to consume it.”
Despite the new branding, News24’s familiar presenters, opinion hosts and flagship programs remain, with the new identity now rolling out across Foxtel, BINGE, regional free to air television, FAST channels and the network’s digital platforms.
Whether the News24 name proves as recognisable as the Sky News Australia brand it replaces is a question that will ultimately be answered over time.
