The new season of Trying introduces a surprise arrival that threatens Nikki and Jason’s hard-won stability.
Apple TV+ has confirmed an Australian premiere date for the fifth season of its comedy series Trying, with Esther Smith and Rafe Spall returning in the lead roles.
The new season, which runs for eight episodes, will see Nikki (Smith) and Jason (Spall) facing fresh upheaval as their family life is disrupted by an unexpected arrival. Princess (Scarlett Rayner) and Tyler’s (Cooper Turner) biological mother, Kat (Charlotte Riley), turns up at their door, bringing what is described as a wave of chaos into their previously settled routine.
The returning ensemble cast includes BAFTA Award winner Darren Boyd (Down Cemetery Road), BAFTA Award nominee Siân Brooke (Blue Lights), Actor Award nominee Celia Imrie (The Thursday Murder Club), BAFTA Award nominee Phil Davis (Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince), BAFTA Award winner Gbemisola Ikumelo (Black Ops) and Actor Award nominee Colin Morgan (Belfast).
Since its debut, Trying has drawn strong audience and critical response. The series holds a 96 per cent critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes, with viewers praising its performances and storytelling. Descriptions of the show as “feel-good”, “poignant” and “addictive” have been widely cited, though such characterisations reflect audience and critical opinion rather than measurable metrics.
The series is created, written and executive produced by Andy Wolton, with executive producers Josh Cole, Sam Pinnell, Chris Sussman, Esther Smith and Rafe Spall also attached. Production is handled by BBC Studios.
Music continues to play a central role in the series, with Ivor Novello Award-winning artist Orla Gartland leading the soundtrack for season five. Original songs are set to debut in each episode. Gartland follows previous contributors Guy Garvey, Maisie Peters, Bear’s Den and BEKA, who worked on earlier seasons.
